Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-1990s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo", "Africa Bamba", "Migra", "Primavera" and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley

I've heard and read some cruel and unkind criticisms of this album. Perhaps it's because I'm an ignoramus when it comes to all the technical stuff - prepared to float along on the sound, knowing nothing more than whether I like it or not - but I just can't understand how anyone could not love this music. Can't remember how long I've been a Santana fan and find it astonishing after all these years, that he can still make the music that rocks me to the bone. The collaboration with other musicians (all of them) worked for me. I can't fault the album. Perhaps if I knew more I would be more critical. If so, I'm glad I don't know more because it's heaven to just listen to this music and enjoy it.

The sign of the times 24 Nov 2003
Format:Audio CD
Being a convert of Santana since the early 80's with a vinyl album by the name of Moonflower I was interested to learn that Santana were to be on "top of the pops". It was on this occasion that I first heard Smooth from their Supernatural album. It just blew me away. I bought the album (1st time), found after many hours invested listening whilst in my car thought it was one of the best albums I've ever bought. On seperation from my partner it was one of the things she insisted on breaking, ( I then bought it again now the 2nd time). Had it stolen recently from my house and therefore am committed to buying it again, ( third time lucky). From the entire album there is only one track that even now I find hard to enjoy, it is the one featuring Lauryn Hill. Personally,I believe that on this occasion she was just along for the ride and didn't rise to challenge. However the rest of the album is worth the investment and time involved to get aquainted with it. If you buy this album and listen without judging by previous Santana albums I believe you will enjoy it and get extreme value for money. I feel I can make no better recommendation. :))

I have to agree with most of the comments noted by others here. This is an eclectic mix of styles, but it does really work - most of the time. 'Maria, Maria', 'Smooth' and the instrumental track are standouts,(even the Spanish stuff hits the spot!) most of the album being worth all the nomionations and praise which have been heaped on it. When I saw that there was Clapton track on here I was really looking forward to hearing it - and after having played the album chronologically, was up for it - the music and playing up to that point are excellant and moving. BUT! the Clapton track must've been recorded around the time of Eric's Pilgrim album, 'cause this track (The Calling) has all the bad things about that album all over it. It is a shame that such a fine offering from one of the worlds finest guitarist has to be spoiled by this offering from two of the worlds greatest guitarists. It's very formulaic and very OBVIOUSY backed by machines rather than humans. If you have the CD, just programme out the last track - sit back, close your eyes and ENJOY the rest of it!
