Review

"Class act...a rollicking, sexy, pacy yarn" (Guardian)

"Written in fizzing, high-voltage vernacular ... Cartwright is an intoxicating writer" (Independent)

"Bold and brash, this playful Cinderella story is told with warm-hearted exuberance... Cartwright is adept at conjuring up vivid characters in a whizz-bang flash by giving them sparking, convincing dialogue." (Daily Mail)

"The plot of SUPERMARKET SUPERMODEL is unlikely to the point of unbelievable, but it's meant to be...Cartwright's strength is in his dialogue and creation of character ...the playwright in him keeps the action moving along, and keeps the reader's interest alive" (Times)

"Touching and funny" (Observer) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Format: Hardcover
Linda Longbottom works on the checkouts at Safeshop. She has an ordinary and uninspiring life, living with her mother and dating Mark who works at the local cash and carry. That is, until she is spotted by Rafe. Rafe works for a modelling agency and before she knows it Linda has become `Crystalline' (she liked science at school) the next modelling sensation. At first Linda is a wide-eyed innocent but it doesn't take long before she begins to lose a sense of herself and it takes a steady steam of unlikely Guardian angels to set her back on track.

Jim Cartwright was the playwright behind `The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' and if you are familiar with and enjoyed play and subsequent film, you'll like `Supermarket Supermodel' too. This book isn't particularly realistic or plausible, but that doesn't matter in the light of such brilliant characterisation (I loved Bet, the wise cracking and mini skirt wearing neighbour!) The story is great and carries you along and the humour and gentleness never becomes sickly, a darker world is often hinted at.

This is a great read, as long as you're not expecting a gritty expose of the modelling industry. I'm glad Linda got her happy ending!

This is a great read from a great writer; Cartwright brings characters to life in a way few others can. His Linda and her many encounters live and breath and you can hear them and even smell them through his writing!
This story like a great fairy tale takes an innocent character through grotesque experiences and emerges with a simple message of hope for all those from humble beginnings...but beware the path you choose in life as there are frightening consequences for the unwary. Cartwright never misses a beat as he tells the story in first person perspective; you know it is good because you even slip into her accent as you read!
What will he write about next?...I want to hear more and see more and experience more of his world and the intense characters that inhabit his mind.

I loved this book. it was alternately funny and frightening. Observations on the people and relationships in the supermarket section were spot on and made me crack up. The plot was a bit too fast for me though - didnt need quite as much 'adventure' - you can tell it was written by a man!!
