I'm not a great fan of the man of steel, but Millar is always worth reading so I gave Red Son a spin. This is really assured story-telling, really confident. Millar hardly puts a foot wrong considering this is a potentially tricky storyline. The conclusion is one of the most satisfying pay-offs I've read in a long time. I strongly recommend this title.

...hence the four stars. The artwork is very good: the characters convey pretty complex emotions.

I have a bit of a problem with some of it though, which is that there's too many other bloody super heroes in it. This is always an infuriating thing with Marvel or DC for me: the endless cross-referencing of the world.

Say you're creating an alternative world where Superman is Russian. An alien from another world who transforms the cold war. Great. With you there. What I don't then want from the story is a SECOND transforming alien in the shape of Brainiac. Now, I'm only a casual reader of the superhero end of comics, and I've watched Justice League only a few times, so like 98% of the population I don't really know a lot about Brainiac and I was wildly disinterested whenever he turned up in this book.

And I've never really understood the appeal of Wonder Woman.

Still, I suppose the big DC fans will probably disagree with me. It must be fun for them.

OMG! I had heard of this book a couple of months ago and just got it through Amazon 2 days ago. I have read it 3 times now because its that good! I liked the amazing twist at the end cos i never saw it coming. It was great to see a couple of the GL's mentioned and the relationship between WW and Supes. The Russian Batman was a great character to include too. For all fans of superman and a good novel for general DC fans.
