Supergirl 8 Oct 2011

Animation is great. It's a great nod to the original book. Great cast, good story. The fight scenes are top notch, special nod to Wonder Woman on how she uses her rope the fight scene with Granny's Harpies. The only thing I have a point with is the Kryptonian. True, we've never heard it before, But after eighty years, you'd think some one would have worked out the spoken word before now. Tim Daly just Spoke the words, but didn't know the meaning. That's also the same with Summer Glau, but this is a very small point compared to the overall presentation. A good film. Keep it up Warner Brothers.

Just a quick review, so apologies if it is badly written - I just finished watching this and loved it. It really is fantastic! I was impressed by 'Under the Red Hood' and its more mature style, 'Apocalypse' continues in this more style, lets hope WB keep it up.

WB has finally realised they need to spend some money on the animation and it really shows here. The animation makes 'Doomsday' animation look childish. Some of the direction is what I would expect to see in a live action movie, great camera angles etc. Many of the fights looked motion captured, there was something very fluid, realistic and believable about them.

Music wise, it is good, but nothing really memorable, you wont find yourself humming at work the next day...it does the job and fits well.

---- Possible spoilers follow ----

Admittedly, the storyline is a little basic, but enough to keep any fan happy. It's mainly about the arrival of Kara, and is more based around Superman than Batman, though Bats is there doing his usual stuff its not really about him (or Wonder Woman).

The final battle is on the Kent farm and is somewhat unexpected, I think this battle tops off the movie almost bringing it up to 5 stars for me. I could have watched the entire battle again, tattered clothes 'S' shield showing through...you know Kal El mean business, and Kara too! Truly the best battle in any WB movie I have seen to date.

Lets hope 'Man of Steel' in 2011 is something like this!

If you are a Batman / Superman fan then you have to see this. So far it is the best I've seen.

This review focuses more on the Region 2 edition of Superman/Batman Apocalypse, which was adapted from the Superman/Batman: Supergirl comic that reintroduced Supergirl into modern comics. Apocalypse scores big points from the start by bringing back veteran voice actors Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly and newcomer Summer Glau proves to be a fine casting for Kara Zor-El, convincingly portraying a confused superpowered teenager on an alien world.

The animation style and character designs reflect Michael Turner's work on the original comic and there are some amazing and brutal fights in this film and plenty of special features, including trailers for various other DC animated films. My only criticisms however are Darkseid, who just doesn't seem threatening enough as he sounds too human, and the lack of a chapter select option, meaning you have to fast forward through the film manually.

Overall however, these are minor detractions from an otherwise excellent animated film and having read the original comic, I can say it is also a faithful adaptation to the animated media. I highly recommend if you enjoyed the comic and the previous animated film Public Enemies.
