But mad irritations aside, I've always had a soft spot for Edguy, even with their unfortunate sense of humour. I had hoped that Helloween had killed off humorous German metal with "Heavy Metal Hamsters". And no, kids, I'm not kidding. For those under a certain age, or those who had corrective brain surgery in 1996, the album "Pink Bubbles Go Ape" contained the song "Heavy Metal Hamsters". And it was just as awful as it sounded. And - spook! - former Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske puts in an appearance on the "Judas At The Opera", the best track of this splendid EP.
Edguy do old fashioned symphonic heavy metal, as originally created by Ronnie James DIo, refined by Iron Maiden and honed over the last 25 years by countless European metal bands who do major business on the continent while the style obsessed British bang on about the next big thing. Well, I don't need the next big thing when there are songs as utterly romptastic and splendiferous as "Judas At The Opera" on the go. The undoubted highlight, it spreads itself out over 7 minutes and is traditional Euro metal at its best. Apart from that bastarding German sticking his oar in just as I'm straining for a high note.
