Amazon.co.uk Review

Supergirl qualifies as one of the most bizarre comic-book adaptations ever to hit the silver screen. Bereft of logic or sensible plotting, but featuring a strong cast and slick special effects, the film follows Superman's cousin Kara (played by Helen Slater in her film debut) as she leaves Krypton to venture to Earth to retrieve the "Omegahedron", a life-force globe vital to her people's survival. She tracks down the device, unaware that it's fallen into the hands of aspiring black magician Selena (Faye Dunaway), which leads to an inevitable showdown.

All of the strong characters in Supergirl are women, making for a nice change of pace from traditional superhero machismo. However, none of the players seem to notice that many things are left unexplained, including how the naive Kara knows so much about Earth while having never been there, how a novice sorceress can attain power so quickly from something she does not understand, and how hardly anyone notices Supergirl flying around their city! (And hey, where's Superman?) Taken as a campy 1980s comic-book relic rather than a serious adaptation, Supergirl is fun because of its engaging special effects and sets, tongue-in-cheek humour and Dunaway's truly inspired performance. Look for Marc McClure reprising his Superman role of Jimmy Olsen, while Mia Farrow and Peter O'Toole have small supporting roles as Kara's mother and mentor, respectively. --Bryan Reesman, Amazon.com

This is one of the most memorable films from my childhood and it is great to be able to now have it in my video collection. It tells the story of Supermans cousin,Kara, and her journey to earth to reclaim her planets power source, the omegahedron.

The acting is exceptional and is a film that everyone will enjoy - especially girls as it is the earliest example of Girl Power that I can remember. Sit back and watch in awe and envy at the witches house in the funfair - Imagine living in a ghost train.

Altogether it is an excellent film that you will watch time and time again. Bring It On!

EXCELLENT 7 Jan 2006

I seen this movie when I was quite young and I couldn't forget it ever since. What attracted me to this movie especially was Helen Slater who played Supergirl. She was gorgeous with that blonde hair and blue eyes and she looked perfect in that costume. The storyline was good and interesting and the cast was well chosen. We do have to consider that it was filmed in the 80's so don't expect too much with the effects.

Nevertheless Supergirl fans won't be disappointed!

This is a great film. I came to it, surprised but delighted, from having seen the first couple of Superman films. I have only ever seen TV cuts of the film, never an official video release, but since it's one of my absolute favourites, I had to write in. When it comes out on DVD, and I sorely hope it will, I will not hesitate to buy it (in fact, that's why I came here on Amazon to see if it was out on DVD).
If I'm to be brutally honest: Peter O'Toole's acting is a little too Shakespearean in this film and some of the special effects are a little rough... but all in all, there's plenty of good in it and it is a delight to watch. The plot is reasonable and doesn't get too tedious, and Halen Slater and Faye Dunaway give great perfomances as meek Linda / confident Supergirl and spellcasting megalomaniac Selena respectively. Some good comedy moments in it too. True fans of Superman and Supergirl will not be disappointed.
The only other downside is that it is fairly obvious that it has not had quite the same polish put on it as the Superman films. But if they made a sequel or two, I'd be right there to buy them.

(For the record, Amazon reviewer, the film DOES state (as Selena leaves the picnic area, it's on the car radio) that Superman has embarked on a mission to another galaxy in this timeframe {:v) )
