Supergirl qualifies as one of the most bizarre comic-book adaptations ever to hit the silver screen. Bereft of logic or sensible plotting, but featuring a strong cast and slick special effects, the film follows Superman's cousin Kara (played by Helen Slater in her film debut) as she leaves Krypton to venture to Earth to retrieve the "Omegahedron", a life-force globe vital to her people's survival. She tracks down the device, unaware that it's fallen into the hands of aspiring black magician Selena (Faye Dunaway), which leads to an inevitable showdown.

All of the strong characters in Supergirl are women, making for a nice change of pace from traditional superhero machismo. However, none of the players seem to notice that many things are left unexplained, including how the naive Kara knows so much about Earth while having never been there, how a novice sorceress can attain power so quickly from something she does not understand, and how hardly anyone notices Supergirl flying around their city! (And hey, where's Superman?) Taken as a campy 1980s comic-book relic rather than a serious adaptation, Supergirl is fun because of its engaging special effects and sets, tongue-in-cheek humour and Dunaway's truly inspired performance. Look for Marc McClure reprising his Superman role of Jimmy Olsen, while Mia Farrow and Peter O'Toole have small supporting roles as Kara's mother and mentor, respectively. --Bryan Reesman, Amazon.com

Supergirl [DVD] [1984] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

I am a great lover of all comic films, this is a real
favourite of mine, but the Reigon 1 DVD has much more
to offer, the extended version has an extra 15 mins.
So if you like nostalga you will love this.

Cheesy but enjoyable this spin off of the Christopher Reeve Superman films has had a bad rep over the years but actually isn't that bad. Certainly nowhere near as bad as the awfull Superman 4 The Quest For Peace Supergirl does at least have a good cast even if they are all hamming it up for all its worth and make Supergirl worth a watch. The plot which sees Superman's cousin Kara played by Helen Slater come to Earth looking for an object that powers her home Argo City which somehow survived the destruction of Superman's home planet Krypton only to find it has fallen into the hands of witch Faye Dunaway and her partner in crime Peter Cook. A very hammy, camp, cheesy, over the top film which also stars Mia Farrow as Supergirl's mother and Peter O' Toole as her mentor and sees Marc Mcclure reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen from the Superman movies for some reason surely Margot Kidder as Lois Lane would have made more sense seeing as one of the characters is her sister Lucy. More female superhero films would be welcome but so far none have been great. A remake as part of DC comics new movie universe as a spin off of Man Of Steel would also strangely be welcome. The film is an odd curiousity then but worth a watch. Just don't expect a classic.

SuperGirl sexy Helen Slater is amazing in this movie and quite frankly a reason worth owning it, she plays the hot cousin of Superman who has to go to earth to find an artefact that will save her world but it falls into the wrong hands as usual, the story has a bit of a weak set up at the beginning but is pretty good fun as the story goes on, its all set around the same timeline of Superman but he's apparently off on another planet helping them at the time, the effects are cool and good budget for the 80's and the soundtrack of course is good, there's plenty of corny action and cheesy lines etc but its all good fun, Helen Slater is a beautiful SuperGirl and looks amazing in her tight red and blue outfit, certainly worth going back too and picking up cheap if you don't have it already!! Be nice to see this on Blu-ray somebody??

UK DVD Picture is pretty decent, no special features (RUNS 120min)

After accidentally losing the Omegahedron, Argo City’s power source, Kara Zor-El (Helen Slater) embarks on a journey to go recover it before Argo City perishes. Upon arriving on Earth, she discovers she has superpowers and adopts the identity of Supergirl, which she uses to help others while on her quest to recover the Omegahedron.

Elsewhere, the Omegahedron has fallen into the hands of Selena (Faye Dunaway), a flunky witch who quickly becomes powerful because of it and who sets her sights on Supergirl, ready to eliminate the Girl of Steel the first chance she can get.

Can Supergirl recover the Omegahedron before Argo City goes dark and Selena is victorious?

It’s superheroine versus supervillainness in this ’80s classic of Good vs Evil.

This flick is every bit a part of my childhood as the Superman movies were. At the time, of course, I was too young to understand the story, but now older, it’s not too bad. Sure, it has some flaws and continuity issues, but at its heart it’s the story about someone trying to right a grievous mistake, something that most of us can relate to.

The visuals and hints of Kryptonian mythology put forth quickly link it to the Superman movies—Supergirl identifies herself as Superman’s cousin while in costume, and also as Clark Kent’s cousin when she’s in disguise as Linda Lee; her supersuit is basically the Christopher Reeve costume from the waist up—and it has a cinematic score that carries a similar heroic tone to that of its male counterpart. Likewise, Marc McClure reprises his role as Jimmy Olsen from the Superman movies and appears as Lucy Lane’s boyfriend (Lucy is Lois Lane’s younger sister).

This is one of the most memorable films from my childhood and it is great to be able to now have it in my video collection. It tells the story of Supermans cousin,Kara, and her journey to earth to reclaim her planets power source, the omegahedron.
The acting is exceptional and is a film that everyone will enjoy - especially girls as it is the earliest example of Girl Power that I can remember. Sit back and watch in awe and envy at the witches house in the funfair - Imagine living in a ghost train.
Altogether it is an excellent film that you will watch time and time again. Bring It On!

This movie was never going to win any awards, despite the talents of Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway. Helen Slater's portrayal of Linda Lee/Kara/Supergirl fits well with the feel of the rest of the movie. I do think this movie is sometimes unfairly slated. Sure, it's got more cheese than a 3-cheese pizza, but it's still entertaining enough.
