2.0 out of 5 stars Supergirl: a two disc wonder?, 18 Mar 2004
I am only slightly ashamed to say that this is one of my favourite movies, mainly because it was the first film I ever saw at the cinema back in early '85 (I vaguely remember being fascinated by the opening credits flying at me). It was the clever cinematography and special effects in this film that got me hooked on movies. Ever since the region 1 release came out in August 2000, I have been pineing for it since it sounded like such a great DVD, but alas my player was region 2 only, and I couldn't afford a new machine. Imagine my relief when on scanning the net, I discovered that it was region 0 after all. I snapped it up and it's great.
The DVD: Picture is great (shame it comes out in black and white on my TV-I'll need to buy a new cable I think)and the colours are balanced and strong (compatible laptop if you're wondering). Sound too is strong, with a great 5.1 mix which is hot on the heels of the Superman DVD, and it's nice to hear Jerry Goldsmith's excellent score treated with respect at last. The director's cut had some wonderful extra footage, some of which I had seen before (cooking the chicken) and some totally new stuff (the new dorm scene) I did think it was odd that some of the blasphemies and certain comments were removed or altered, as this is an eighties movie, and it should reflect the time it was made. Still it doesn't detract from the movie itself. The extras on disc 1 are very good considering this film bombed at the box office. The 'making of' is brilliant and much better than its modern equivalents, and the trailers are very interesting, especially the German one (actually, that one is just plain funny!) All in all, a great set - two versions of the movie and a brilliant bunch of extras. If you're a fan of the film, this is definitely worth seeking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Camp as Butlins and a great soundtrack to boot!, 8 Jan 2004
This movie is definitely one of my favorites of all time! Helen Slater is gorgeous as the titular superheroine - a great role model for a girl to have. Faye Dunaway chews the scenery as the gloriously camp Selena and thespian Peter O'Toole brings a touch of sophistication as Zaltar. The soundtrack to this movie is FANTASTIC - Jerry Goldsmith is a G-d and his CV has to be seen to be believed. I would recommend the Supergirl CD to any classical music lovers out there. My favourite scene is when Supergirl is flying over Chicago looking for the Omegahedron - the beautiful aerial scenery is just breathtaking, and paired with Goldsmith's score is nothing short of beautiful. Coming is a close second is the 'aerial ballet' scene where Supergirl lands on Earth and discovers her powers. Supergirl's transformation to her alter ego Linda Lee is amazing - much more effective than putting on a pair of glasses and slicking your hair back, like her cousin Superman. For a long time I thought they were played by 2 different actresses! (Well, I was only 5!) Unfortunately the special effects leave much to be desired, but it WAS the '80's I suppose. If you're willing to suspend your disbelief slightly then you will enjoy this movie as much as I do. The one scene I hate is when Supergirl meets two would be rapists. She soon has them lying in a crumpled heap on the floor, but it has a dark and disturbing tone that is out of joint and unsettling. In conclusion, this movie is brilliant and I love it!
