Book Description

3 Jun 2010
Networks rule the world. Take an organization of any kind: a corner shop, a new venture, a gang of drug traffickers, the United Nations, Google, the place you work. They are all networks, with their own rules and values and ways of communicating. Everybody belongs to networks and they make a huge difference to our lives - to our happiness and to our opportunities. As the world becomes more densely populated, the connections between us are expanding in ever more intricate ways - via the web, mobile phone technology and global media. How does this affect us? And how can we make the most of these connections? SUPERCONNECT looks at how the successful and fortunate few behave - and shows that if you want to be one of them, you have to play by the network rules.

An important contribution to an emerging field of research. Very readable and engaging. Many familiar stories from social science and history are 're-evaluated' from a modern network perspective. If it's not always for all the answers this book provides, it's certainly the questions it raises that makes it a book I wish to recommend to those interested in social change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Superconnect! 9 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
I'll admit my first reaction was scepticism....Koch has sold millions of books expounding (albeit, very engagingly) the benefits of the 80:20 principle, where 80% of results derive from 20% of inputs. Surely further proof of the value of prioritisation, and how spending the majority of our effort on those people/ customers/ things will allow us to gain more happiness/ money/ fulfilment. QED? Not quite.

In Superconnect, Koch & Lockwood explore the value of those tenuous links and how the diversity of those weak links in our social and professional networks can be collided to produce extraordinary possibilities and enormous success. Always engaging, punctuated with poignant examples, Superconnect is a roadmap for more creative, productive networking (or even, getting more out of the people you know on Facebook).

Superconnect is also a damn good read. 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars 80-20 doesn't apply 8 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
as a firm believer in richard koch's 80-20 principal, i picked up his newest book SUPERCONNECT , with the intention of saving time and effort, getting 80% of its value by reading only 20% of the book. after all, that is what koch promised us in his highly rated series of books on the 80-20 principal over the last 10 years.
Well, i can report that this time it didn't work. i expected to find his latest book ,coauthored with greg lockwood ,to be informative but what i didn't count on was it being such a great read as well. rather than reading only 20% ,i found myself stuck to the book till every one of its 250 or so pages were devoured .
the authors mix tales of their personal experiences with those of successful businessmen and thus impart sociological and anthrological information regarding building useful networks for business and personal improvement while entertaining the reader so that it isn't dry and academic .i loved it.
