Book Description

14 Nov 2013 In Detail
Among the rarest and most exciting classic cars are the supercharged Mercedes cars of the 1920s and 1930s, exemplified by the fire-breathing S, SS, SSK and SSKL models with their supercharged 7-litre engines, and the exceedingly glamorous, though softer and less stark, 500K and 540K cars which succeeded them in the mid-1930s. There were other models too, going back to 1923 and on to the construction of the last mighty 770K in 1942. All of them, and the long, pioneering history of supercharging by Mercedes, are described in this book, including the cars designed by Ferdinand Porsche between 1924 and 1928 and the road-racing exploits of star drivers like Rudolf Carracciola.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book on the supercharged Mercedes 8 Feb 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is a must for any English-speaking afficionado of the supercharged Mercedes cars built from the 1920s through the early 1940s. It seems to summarize the facts reported in various other excellent publications, such as a few very good magazine articles; the two volumes by Jan Melin; the tome by Lewandowski; and the fantastic standard German-language reference work by Werner Oswald (though unfortunately Mr. Taylor was only in possession of the 1984 version of Oswald's book; the 1986 version contains significant corrections, revisions and additions to much of the data, including that on the 540K). All in all this is a welcome addition to the "Kompressorwagen" section of my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Supercharged Mercedes 1 Mar 2014

The pre-WWI supercharged Mercedes were respected throughout the world.. The author, James Taylor, does an outstanding job in detailing the history of the models with both period and current photographs. It s a worthy successor to the Supercharged Mercedes of the '30s which was published approximately 20 years ago.
