The genuine Apple Smart Cover offers great protection to your shiny new iPad 2 and iPad 3 screen but that's pretty much where it ends. What you need is the Modern-Tech Gel Case, compatible with the Smart Cover.
With this case, available in several colours, you can have peace of mind that the corners and back of the device will be protected from scratches and knocks, dents and other damage.
Precision cutouts in the gel case enable full use of the iPad 2 without having to remove the cover at any time.
Your Smart Cover will fit as normal due to the left hand side of the cover having precise cutouts to allow the magnetic clasps of the Smart Cover to connect to the device.
The back case does not in any way interfere with the function of the Apple Smart Cover

Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking for a low cost solution to protect the back of my IPad 2 and still be able to use the original Apple Smart cover.
Like most customers my decision is influenced by other people's experiences based on their reviews.
I took a chance with this product as at the time of writing there were no other reviews!
The item arrived in normal amazing Amazon quick time, and was duly fitted to the IPad within half a minute. The plastic gel material is completely clear and soft with all the apertures cut in the correct places, and does not obscure the camera lens, speaker etc.
There was no difficulty experienced fitting the case, and the Smart cover fits exactly as before offering full screen protection, and when folded back for use does not bend or distort in any way.
I would imagine in cold weather if the cover proved less than supple, before fitting you could always run a hairdryer over it to soften, but at room temperature this would not be necessary.
The only negative I can see is that you need to slip the bottom lip of the gel case out of the way before using a docking station. Other than that the regular plug fits perfectly with the case in place.
All in all a very good purchase does the job well, and cost less than other products on sale.

This is perfect for protecting the back of your ipad2! Seeing as Apple only supply smart covers for the ipad2 (which don't protect the back at all!) this is perfect to use with the smart cover! It's flexible and fits perfectly. For the price it's definitely worth the buy!!

If you want to use the Apple Smart cover (instead of a bigger, heavier, "all encompassing" leather cover then this is what you need to protect the back of your precious iPad.
It is a good fit, slim enough to add very little depth to the iPad, light enough to add very little weight, robust enough to offer a reasonable degree of protection and, being clear, has virtually no impact on the visual elegance of the machine.
I really do not understand the negative comments made by others about the buttons. Yes, there is a layer of plastic over them, and it is raised to make it easier to locate them. Operating the buttons is as easy without the cover as it s with it.
As for the suggestion that there is no space for the charging cable, I can only assume the reviewer had put it on the wrong way round. Be assured that there are spaces for the charging/sync cable, the earphone socket, the camera, the lock switch, the mic and the speaker. The lower edge is cut back to allow the Smart cover to attach to the iPad.
