Book Description

11 Aug 2011
Here's a unique take on crochet with a collection of projects that are murderously macabre rather than the usual cute and cuddly. If you are bored of cute and sweet crochet, then you will love Nicki Trench's gruesome, spooky and downright disturbing collection of zombies, witches, murderers and more. There are four chapters of characters who have committed all kinds of unforgivable deeds. The first chapter, Scary Families, has creepy relatives who definitely believe that blood is thicker than water, such as the Queen of the Vampires, complete with felt crown and lace detailing. In Famous Scaries, meet classic characters like the Headless Horseman, who has crocheted blood spurting from his neck, and his horse Hades, made in jet black yarn. The Living Dead is a macabre mix of werewolves, witches and the clinically insane, while the Deathly Companions chapter has murderous villains and even a shrunken head. As well as crocheting your own cast of scary characters, you will find patterns for accessories including the spider bag complete with eight legs. At the back of the book is a comprehensive techniques section explaining all you need to know, which makes the projects suitable for any level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius! 13 Aug 2011
By Skanks1
For all lovers of alternative, non-twee creative crafts, this book is a must! So many books of a similar kind look promising on the cover, but then lack real substance and end up gathering dust, but this book is full of the most amusing creatures to crochet - things that appeal to all ages and genders. I found the technical help relating to different stitches (at the back of the book) to be very clear and helpful too. Nicki Trench has obviously put her heart and her humour into this book. Not only are the creatures adorably scary, but each one has a hilarious little write-up giving it's name and a brief description of its personality or circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scaries come alive! 1 Feb 2012
This book was a gift from my dear sister. Being a novice & only knowing 4 basic stitches, along with no knowledge of abbreviations or in fact how to read any crochet pattern & that includes a granny square. I would repeatedly cast on & off trying to make a granny square myself (thats how novice i was)

I'm proud to say after my first attempt of the pocket Ghost. I've crochet nearly all of the scaries within a year. I found Batty Bat wings the hardest to do, but with the help of other sources I've cracked that tiny problem & Batty Bat does fly.

I've used the patterns and produced other fantasy creatures, as you learn, practise & become more confident along with the helpful stitches guide at the back - For example the horns on the devil i crochet one horn to make a nose for a witch.

This book has traught me how to read & understand patterns while making super scary crochet creatures & given me confidence with many crochet projects.

Great crochet book for a person who really doesn't do girly pink flowers. Great for a Gothic type of teenager. Brilliant
