5.0 out of 5 stars The best band from Mali 28 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
Just back from the Womad festival at Reading. Hearing this band live was even better than listening to it on a CD. The guitar riffs are mind-blowing, and the whole ensemble plays together as one perfect musical instrument - including the vocals.
The Super Rail Band of Bamako was set up in the 1970, playing traditional Mali music at the central railway stations cafe in the capital Bamako. They have brought this old music into the 20th and then the 21st century, adding jazz and Cuban-African influences and fusing them into a smooth, rhythmic, perfect whole. This CD captures the best of the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Relaxed and Cool 8 Jun 2012
By Ronald Gold - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Now that I've awarded this five stars, I'm trying to express what there is a about it that gives me so much pleasure. I imagine myself strolling into the Buffet Hotel in Bamako. There's a not-too-dimly lit, not very crowded dance floor. And there aren't too many people actually dancing; they're mostly just strolling or sashaying around like I am. And the band is playing, not on a stage but all around the room. Over there, there are a few guys singing a chorus. Right here in front of me, a sax or guitar soloist does a few licks. The mood is always upbeat but never hyped up. I'm not "listening" to the music, I'm inside it. So cool!

I've been to Bamako, but never to the Buffet. I admire a lot of Malian music, but feel so close to the Super Rail Band.
