I regret buying this so much - even doing this review is a chore, because there are bsolutely no redeeming qualities to it at all; the only reason I'm forcing myself to relive the experience is so that no-one else will have to go through it.
Let's get the premise out of the way first: This is a described as a 'parody' of
Super Size Me , a serious attempt to see what would happen if you ate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days, which given the uncomfortable nature of the results, was very funny at times. Ironically, Super High Me has comedic intentions, but has NO laughs; it's NOT a parody - it just uses the same format and tries to jump on the back of the original's success.
We follow Dave Benson as he gets stoned for 30 days, 24/7. First though, he has to go 30 days without it, which takes up at least half the film. It's telling that Benson found this more difficult than being stoned. Having put up with his endless whinging throughout this section, we finally get to see what happens when he is forced to smoke it all day every day...
What happens - does he, though the process of having too much of a good thing, get put off it at all? No. Is there a serious attempt to examine the effects on his body and mind? Well his doctor features throughout, but there's no real focus on what he says in any serious way. The answer is that NOTHING happens; it's easy for him - he's used to smoking all day anyway.
It all sounds like something hardly worth giving a 1-star review to though, doesn't it? Well let me try to explain why:
Doug Benson is incredibly irritating. He thinks he is very funny and very clever. He thinks smoking dope is both funny and clever too. And his friends also think he is very funny and very clever. Physically he reminds me of that comic shop nerd in The Simpsons, but he has a camp, nasal Californian accent that gets really tedious - especially when you realise that he has nothing intelligent, funny or pertinent to say.
His friends are all nasal and camp too - they say things like "that's so RUUUUDE!!!", and laugh whenever DB breathes.
If I was going to smoke a joint, Doug and his mates would be the last people I'd do so with...
They film a local outlet for medical marijuana, which (coincidentally?) get closed down by the feds half-way through their filming. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't partly their doing, having drawn attention to it in the first place.
I've wasted too much time on this film now - it makes pot smokers look like a bunch of morons. I took it round to my dealer's to watch, and none of us laughed once. Cheech and Chong this aint.
AVOID!!!!!
