Product Description

Stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year*, Doug Benson brings you the hilarious film, Super High Me, in which he looks at the current situation with medical marijuana in California and the recent explosive growth in legal dispensaries in Los Angeles. All captured on film, Doug smokes, eats and vaporises marijuana for thirty consecutive days in order to get Super High . But there is a catch - first Doug must go thirty days without any marijuana and undertake a number of tests in an effort to find out what marijuana does and how it really affects people. Along the way Doug performs across the US and hangs out with fellow celebrities Sarah Silverman, Bob Odenkirk and Dave Navarro creating a hilarious look at a controversial subject..

I regret buying this so much - even doing this review is a chore, because there are bsolutely no redeeming qualities to it at all; the only reason I'm forcing myself to relive the experience is so that no-one else will have to go through it.

Let's get the premise out of the way first: This is a described as a 'parody' of Super Size Me , a serious attempt to see what would happen if you ate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days, which given the uncomfortable nature of the results, was very funny at times. Ironically, Super High Me has comedic intentions, but has NO laughs; it's NOT a parody - it just uses the same format and tries to jump on the back of the original's success.

We follow Dave Benson as he gets stoned for 30 days, 24/7. First though, he has to go 30 days without it, which takes up at least half the film. It's telling that Benson found this more difficult than being stoned. Having put up with his endless whinging throughout this section, we finally get to see what happens when he is forced to smoke it all day every day...

What happens - does he, though the process of having too much of a good thing, get put off it at all? No. Is there a serious attempt to examine the effects on his body and mind? Well his doctor features throughout, but there's no real focus on what he says in any serious way. The answer is that NOTHING happens; it's easy for him - he's used to smoking all day anyway.

It all sounds like something hardly worth giving a 1-star review to though, doesn't it? Well let me try to explain why:

Doug Benson is incredibly irritating. He thinks he is very funny and very clever. He thinks smoking dope is both funny and clever too. And his friends also think he is very funny and very clever. Physically he reminds me of that comic shop nerd in The Simpsons, but he has a camp, nasal Californian accent that gets really tedious - especially when you realise that he has nothing intelligent, funny or pertinent to say.
His friends are all nasal and camp too - they say things like "that's so RUUUUDE!!!", and laugh whenever DB breathes.

If I was going to smoke a joint, Doug and his mates would be the last people I'd do so with...

They film a local outlet for medical marijuana, which (coincidentally?) get closed down by the feds half-way through their filming. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't partly their doing, having drawn attention to it in the first place.

I've wasted too much time on this film now - it makes pot smokers look like a bunch of morons. I took it round to my dealer's to watch, and none of us laughed once. Cheech and Chong this aint.

AVOID!!!!!

Maybe living in Amsterdam for 10 years has made me numb to the idea that smoking pot is so f***ing awesome by itself, but it just didn't do it for me. There is no real science involved, the "experiments" that are being conducted are not groundbreaking (not even in the humor department).

Rated 2/5 because 1/5 suggests I hated it. I don't hate it; I just don't care for it, which probably makes it worse.

I love this film. 1 May 2012
Format:DVD
I have no idea what L.Hennessey is talking about. This film IS a parody of Super Size Me, which started out as a joke he (Doug Benson) did onstage and ended up becoming this documentary (all explained in the film). It's not about Doug trying to make you think pot is cool, I don't think he cares if other people think it's cool, as long as they mind their own business. It's about saying that if you think it is, you should be able to smoke it, and ultimately, after putting his body though the same thing Morgan Spurlock did in his (also brilliant film), he fairs much better and puts his body through far less damage, even though the substance he is experimenting on is a first class illegal drug (except in the tolerant states, but he goes into much of the confusion caused by state laws vs federal laws in the film, and by the way, it's actually pretty informative for those of us who have found it hard to comprehend the weed laws in the US), not something marketed at children and the poor as a viable substitute for actual food.

If you find Doug annoying that's fair enough, I don't, I'm a fan of his podcast and stand-up, I think he's funny, dry, smart and well worth watching. However, the people talking aren't sycophantic idiots, they're comedians (largely), who don't have a desire to take everything seriously all the time. This is a tongue-in-cheek documentary, not a full scientific investigation, if it were it would be dull, if you want dull studies into marijuana they are available on the web. This is just a funny little film by a funny guy about getting high. Chill out. Maybe smoke a bowl.
