Hang About, Look Out for this DVD. Gudrun Ure is priceless, extremely likeable and full of energy as the Scottish crime fighting old age pensioner with super powers.
The DVD transfer is watchable, picture quality originally wasn't that good anyway but the gallery feature & brilliant cover artwork make up for that!
One of the things I love is the soundtrack, apart from the legendary theme tune each episode has it's own score (as opposed to repeating the same incidental music), yes it's typically 80's but is a thoughtful touch. The stunts are not only funny but impressive. Granny Smith participates in a LOT of jumping off buildings, surfing, pole vaulting, riding her flycycle in the sky, somersaults, skateboarding & holding cars above her head. The show itself is a required taste but it's a children's programme, so the acting isn't expected to be top notch. Adventure packed episodes stand out against a few duff ones & over the series the episodes & special effects improve. Supergran and the Doppleganger features a scene were a wrongfully imprisoned teary-eyed Supergran is protesting her innocence & it's actually a little bit moving. You can tell that the cast absolutely loved their roles. Stellar performances from Bill Shine & Scottish stars Iain Cuthbertson, Billy Connolly and Lulu. Raving Beauty Contest, Day Out At The Sea, The Magic Ray, Grounded & The Course Of True Love are my favourite episodes!
Some of the cuts and edits don't flow, I think this is because the directer used one camera & in some ways it feels a bit of a mess...but this handmade approach & hilarious lingo ("Tartan tarantula" "Scunner" "You old mingebag" "Wolly old windbag" "Saucy wee scouser") is actually what made "Supergran" so memorable. It's a heartwarming, feel-good comedy & all 13 episodes are perfectly preserved on a well planned release. A joy to have on DVD & lowest price from Amazon. The infamous image of Supergran, flying through the skies of Chiselton on the flycycle is unforgettable & epic!
