Review
When Etienne De Crécy burst onto the scene back in 1997 with his Super Discount project, the influence of French electronica on dance music up until this point had been confined to Jean Michel Jarre and the racy Euro-disco of Cerrone decades earlier.
Whether EDC and compatriots Daft Punk and StGermain were directly responsible for a starring role and the mass acceptance of Air, Cassius, Stardust, Bob Sinclar et al is purely subjective; what's not is their supportrole in the breaking down of boundaries that would almost certainly be responsible for the later Gallic invasion.
Super Discount 2 is another cross-pollination of electro, techno and house with De Crécy the major architect. Its pluses include the storming instrumental "Fast Track" (an amazingly simple driving number in partnership with Julien Delfaud and Alex Gopher built around a relentless bassline), the neo-classical Daft Punk-like "Grokster" and the ultra funky bleeper, "Poisoned".
Elsewhere Giorgio Moroder's influences can be heard on the Midnight Express-like "Bit Torrent"; while the club fraternity will likely embrace "Overnet" (again with Gopher) and the simplistic analogue synths of "Limewire".
Once more De Crécy has manufactured an album of more than just mere fillers; and in the ultra addictive "Fast Track" the new wave of French techno has an anthem in the making. --Jack Smith

The first Super Discount was released 7 long years ago, when French House (or even French dance music) was largely unknown. Super Discount surprised many, and regularly found itself at the top of annual lists of good dance comps; it was also recognised as something of a breakthrough in creating an identifiably European house flavour. So now, after years of great releases by Etienne de Crecy, Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier, Air etc, a second volume seems a little late and slightly redundant. But with the current malaise in dance it may have seemed like an opportunity to recapture some of the old spark and a commercially sound move - what a relief to hear it isn't crud! SD2 sticks to the template of minimal instrumental house with the occasional vocal sample, but benefits from the recent electro revival: tracks like Bit Torrent and Soul Seek throb with the squiggliest synth lines since Tube & Berger's Straight Ahead. It won't have the impact of the first instalment, but this is well worth investigating.

It's been a long time since Super Discount was released - way back in 1997.
And personally i thought no. 2 would never top the first album, which was synonomous with the French wave that revolutionised house in the late 90s.
Good news! It does. Whilst serving up a different style of house, a more electro-tech, feel it's just as brilliant as the first album. As with Super Discount, none of the tracks stand out as huge "anthems" but 'Fast Track' with it's driving bass-guitar riff and shifting tempo is definetly aimed at the dancefloor as are 'Limewire' and 'Overnet'.
Not the french filtered disco of the first volume, but very much "finger-on-the-pulse" house with a dinstinctive Parisian flavour. Enjoy.

As good as this kind of music gets at the minute. Track 08: Soulseek is particularly staggering. Possibly the best piece of music in the last 10 years...yes, yes it is.
