Book Description

11 Mar 2010
Come and meet 35 brand-new dainty delights in "Super-super Cute Crochet", the must-have book that's packed with patterns to make a whole collection of furry friends. The projects are easy to do - each animal uses just a few basic stitches, so even complete beginners will be making their own menagerie in no time. Author Brigitte Read introduces for the first time her special technique - brush crochet. Simply use a small brush on your finished toy to fluff it up and give an adorable finish that really brings your animal to life. Brigitte also has innovative ideas and details to enhance the patterns, like the egg pouches for the just-hatched terrapins. With five chapters covering a whole range of animals, from everyday pets to the colourful and curious, you can make kittens, koalas, bunnies, dogs and even a duck-billed platypus. There are farmyard animals, ocean swimmers, African residents, underground diggers and tree dwellers - in other words, more than enough to keep any crochet hook busy! With straight forward instructions, imaginative designs, a full techniques section and gorgeous photography, this book is a must-have for anyone who loves cute, cuddly and creative crocheting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very cute - but instructions lacking 8 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase
I'm currently attempting to make the very cute rabbit on the front cover and have already come across mistakes and omissions in instruction.
The head part appears to instruct the incorrect number of stitches on the first couple of rounds - very frustrating when you only notice after you're halfway through!
The photos are beautiful in themselves, but close to useless as to working out the make up of the piece - again the rabbit - you'd never know it has a white underbelly! They're rather too concerned with the situation and having nice out of focus areas than actually showing you the finished article.
Finally, the instructions are lacking - in several parts it instructs you to chain a row and then refers to rounds in the same line. Again, without photos to refer to, it's very difficult to work out what's meant.
Shall have to see how it turns out, but at the moment I feel like I've guessed at about 30% of the pattern - not really what you want.

Maybe all the other patterns are much more thorough, I'll see if I can be bothered to try any more after this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly cute buuuuuuut.... 30 April 2010
The patterns in this book are incredibly cute, and I keep wanting to make more and more. I have already made the Siberian Hamster which is very adorable, however I had to add extra rounds to the base when I made it to make it look vaguely proportional as the eyes I used for the head, although larger than stated (6mm rather than 5mm) were too small compared to the photo. If you are going to use safety eyes and noses, buy a range of sizes, even for one project as sometimes the sizes are not stated, or the incorrect size is given. For some of the projects it would be nice if more photos were given for the construction phase, and if the yarn brand and colourway was stated.

I've also started making the owls however I've noticed that the photo shows the owls having claws, but the pattern doesn't give instructions on how to make them.

It's worth noting that for the few projects which do suggest Sirdar Blur as the yarn to use, that by the time the book was published, this yarn was discontinued.

2.0 out of 5 stars too many mistakes 22 Sep 2010
By grumpy
I agree with other reviewers on this page - the animals are gorgeous and I really like the idea of brushing the wool to make them fluffy.
However...the patterns are really badly written - there are lots of errors, and even if you are a seasoned animal crocheter they can trip you up. I made the anteater, but there were errors in the increasing, there seemed to be way too many rounds and the patterns don't tell you which way round the body part is, which makes life difficult when you come to sew them together. The pictures really don't help. It would also be nice if they stated what sort of eyes were used for the animal models, otherwise they end up not resembling the picture at all (a problem when crocheting for children who want 'that one').
Nice for inspiration, but I wouldn't recommend it for the patterns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute but mistakes in the patterns 26 Oct 2010
The animals are really cute when you make them, but there are quite a few mistakes in the patterns (such as how many stitches you should have at the end of an increase row, and the crocodile pattern doesn't have any instructions at all on how to make the teeth!!!). There are very few instructions on how to assemble the items too. You've got to be prepared to make it up as you go along at times!
It seems to me that it was published a little hastily without having an independant person check the patterns/instructions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 6 Aug 2011
By Shellie
I wish I'd read the reviews before buying this book. I agree the toys are very cute but I found to make some of them with the same wool as in the pictures would cost a small fortune.

I have the Amigurumi (cozy) book and have crocheted lots of toys so didn't think I was a novice but I didn't get the same results using this book. I attempted the cat pattern and got something that you might see on Halloween! It's head looked like a dogs, the body was huge compared to the head and it had tiny legs, in fact I gave up on it in the end!

I also agree the lack of instructions is frustrating. It often doesn't make it clear where or when to add the eyes and at what point to stuff the various parts of the toy. I know most of the time this is obvious but even so there are patterns where the head and body is one piece so a bit of spoon-feeding would be helpful.

I'll stick to my old trusty Amigurumi book in future.

This book is delightful! Lots of cute animals to make. everything from the humble hamster to a duck billed platypus! Its the sort of book that will have you *ooooing! and awwwwing* from the start.
It has a nice section at the back to which illustrates the basic stitches used throughout the book, so even a beginner will find this helpful.
I love it, this is sure to be one of my favorites... now I just have to find the time to make them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Treasure 31 Mar 2010
An absolutely wonderful book to own. The patterns are great and instructions easy to follow. There is even a guide to basic crochet stitches in the back.
The lay-out is excellent, with a little description of each animal as well as a complete list of what is needed to make it.
Wonderful photography!
Be careful when you browse through the book with your children: they will want you to make every single one!
