Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Ursula Rucker has been working hard over the last few years to bring her unique brand of urban poetry to a wider audience. For her debut Supa Sista she has enlisted many of her previous collaborators (Britt, 4Hero, Robert Yancey III, Philip Charles) to provide a diverse musical backdrop for her colourful, intelligent and ultra-dope verbalising. Her firm and gentle voice, which issues forth with cool and confident, crystalline clarity, has helped to break down preconceived barriers and bring spoken word into the realm of the flavasome and funky on many occasions before but this album should help bring this amazing oral tradition properly to the masses. The rich, textured soundscapes--which range from sassy soul to laid-back jazz and flowing drum & bass--form suitably refined contours within which Rucker delivers sophisticated soliloquys and incisive, erudite poems. Here and there she brings artists such as Daniel Thomas, M.A.D.,U-Love, Vicki Miles and Ovasoul into the fray but mainly this is her platform and she uses it to talk about love, womanhood and life with an impressive honesty. Supa Sista is as fresh and inspiring as anything Rucker has ever done and proves once and for all that this type of funky ass poetry can be dazzling, beautiful and accessible. --Paul Sullivan

BBC Review

Long term, prime exponent of the New York Slam poetry scene, Ursula Rucker has spent the last seven years working with some of the finest downtempo outfits including Silent Poets and The Roots. Whilst her talents have embellished their work from 1994 onwards, it is former musical partners 4Hero, Alexkid and King Britt who have returned the gesture and collaborated with her on this beautiful fusion of hip hop, nu-jazz and soul.

Inspired by the social commentary of black female writers Zora Neale Hurston and Sonia Sanchez, Ursula Rucker has made it her mission to elevate the mind of hip hop and purify the art form. Like her previous work Supa Sista fixes Ursula's attentions firmly on the issues of sexuality, technology, women's rights, politics, education, evolution and spirituality.

Unlike so many working in the business she is an engaged woman who knows the true power of words. Levelling criticism at some of her male contemporaries for the effects that the violence and machismo in their lyrics has on the young, she purrs, "... formidable minds pay the price for your microphone mistakes. Change or be changed. Break the chains, don't be slaves".

Lazy beats with sweet soul soaked in Rhodes piano and double bass punctuation provide a wonderful, musical contrast to the often gritty subject matter. "Philadelphia Child" combines the city's trademark strings with tabla percussion whilst "What???" extends the variety to subtle drum and bass rhythms all of which compliment Ursula's vocals.

Charged with 'she-lectricity', hers is a silken delivery that, like Michael Franti's, demonstrates that a quiet word in the ear can speak volumes above the microphone rant. Ursula is one that would like to see hip hop become more responsible and more original. This is a woman who is both a poet and performer with important things to say and with her smoky, seductive lyricism it is all too easy to listen and absorb. --Andy Puleston

Philadeplhia's burgeoning concious future-soul movement has unearthed Ursula Rucker who in her debut Supa Sista shows more potential than her mainstream peers such as Badu et al. Abely assisted from the wonderful production of our very own 4 Hero who provide the perfect platform for UR's incisive songs perpetrate a smoky ambience the more substantial listeners will appreciate. Watch out for "What???" - an awsome mockery of todays car/bra/bar mentality.
Difficult to classify, easy to immerse into, Supa Sista is for the mind as well as the feet. Kick back, relax & enjoy the celebral stimulation!

Simply unmissable 20 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you are a fan of meaningful hip-hop, such as Common, The Roots, D'Angelo and Jill Scott etc, this is an album that you must buy. It is simply amazing. Ursula Rucker is the talented poet that can be heard on the end of any of The Root's albums and also contributes to "Love Poems" by Bilal. This album reflects on the lifes of people on the streets (as Ursula is based from Phillie) and that urban feels runs throughout a musically astute and lyrically flawless album. This album is a must-have for all the fans of "True Hip-hop". Do not buy this album if you like Missy Elliot, Puff Daddy or Jay Z.

I first came across Ursula on other peoples albums, the likes of 4Hero, Jazzanova, The Roots etc and her unique flow and sound of voice always captivated me, not only stylistically but also in the content of her lyrics....she really does have something to say and has found her medium to get it across wonderfully.

The tracks range in feel from Jazz to Funk to Hip-Hop/Soul, and other artists guest from time to time including the beautiful voice of Vicki Miles, with only the technophobic track DigiChant not offering much in the way of musical backing..

If you're looking for some soulful intelligent music, sit back, relax, spark up and let Ms Rucker do the talking....
