The multi-function one-size-fits-all SATA/IDE adapter I bought prior to this simply didn't work with my old laptop SATA drive. I didn't expect much from this box, given the price, but as long as it made the connection, I'd have been happy.
This is actually a pretty well made item. It's an all-metal construction. The two covers unclip to remove them, released by a single button on one end. The panel fit is very good.
It includes a dual-USB to mini-USB power/data lead, 4 screws to secure the drive, even a suitable screwdriver to tighten the screws. There's a plastic sheet inside to insulate the control board from the case plus a leatherette wallet to keep it in. I honestly can't see how this could be improved. Oh and it works too!!

I bought this on a whim to house the hard drive of my previous dead laptop. I was surprised to find that it works great, and for such a low price too! I managed to retrieve my old files and now I use it as a game storage drive. Its fast USB connection allows rapid access to files, it came with the necessary cable and works just like any other external drive.

Easy to assemble and use, while also appearing subtle and sleek, I would recommend it to anyone who needs an enclosure for this type of drive.

I bought this for the purpose of cloning my machine onto a new HDD and then housing my old drive as a spare external drive.

A few observations:

- First of all, the build quality is not as good as it looks in the pictures, its actually just two nesting pieces of very thin stamped aluminium, without the silver strap around the middle.

- The drive was an extremely tight fit and swapping out the new drive after cloning my machine was a bit hair raising [TIP: most 2.5" drives seem to have threaded holes for mounting screws on the side - stick a toothpick in and pull up while pushing down on the (thin) edge of the caddy with your thumbnail... you'll have to do this a couple of times in alternating holes but it works]

- The control board bends so that you can connect the drive but the SATA connection is very tight so removing the drive seems to have the potential to damage it.

- It is very compact thinner and slimmer than the Freecom XXS line, but a little longer. The tight fit means that it does actually feel quite solid when assembled, however it provides virtually no shock protection, or impact protection along the flat surface so the advantage in portability is offset by the lack of robustness for mobile applications.

It comes with a leatherette case which provides marginally more protection and a good quality USB cable with an extra connection at the computer end for machines that put out marginal power from the USB sockets.

In summary, it did the job, and for £6 all in I don't have too many complaints, but it may be worth investing a few more ££'s if you want to carry this any further than the next room, or to swap out the drive in it regularly .

I bought a SATA drive, instead of a PATA/IDE drive, by mistake. Rather than have the hassle of returning, I decided to use it as an external drive - which I had wanted anyway.

So bought this enclosure to house it. Slotted in very easily, and screwed up with the provided screws and screwdriver. Pretty neat unit that sits well in its pouch.

Did have a problem getting my laptop to see the device. It seems that until the (new) drive is partitioned and formatted, it is not recognised. Quick bit of research and I found that (for XP Pro):

click Start, then right click My Computer, and select Manage, then select Disc Management. You can then see the device and do the partitioning formatting stuff.

After this, all works well.

At this price (incl postage) it is a great deal.

Having sent for two of these items in February 2010 and thought the quality was very good, I ordered a further to items in October 2010. I did not need them immediately, so they remained unopened for a month (my fault). Having selected suitable 2.5 inch hard drives, I opened the packets for what I assumed would be the same items and quality - WRONG !!! The items sent in October were thin tin plate with an electronic circuit clanging around inside, no way to screw the disk drive in place and the two halves simply snapped together - well, roughly. No way were the items as per the Amazon pictures which clearly showed a three piece case, screwdriver, screws and USB cable. Either do not buy this expensive rubbish or check your order immediately and return it if not as shown.SUNWIRE 2.5" HDD SATA Enclosure Caddy USB 2.0 For Laptop Hard Drive - XP/VISTA/WIN-7/MAC - Black

ADDED 2 December 2010. Although weeks past the order date, I did bring the quality of this product to the attention of e4deal and their Customer Service was excellent. I was offered a replacement or refund and opted for a refund as a personal search showed they did not have the originals in stock. So, poor product second time around, but excellent Customer Service in the way the problem was handled

This little enclosure enabled the HDD from a defunct Dell laptop to be used for external backups. It is a very neat unit, easy to assemble, and includes screws and screwdriver to fix the drive in the case - also the connecting USB lead with twin plugs for those computers with limited power per USB port.
