Format:Audio CD
Elkie Brooks is one of the best soul and blues artists we have in this country.
This is a collection that spans Elkie's career from 1964 up to the present day and is worth having for many reasons but the main one for me is that the material Elkie recorded in the 1960s has finally been released - having previously available on a fan club only LP some years ago.
Listening to those recordings it is very clear to hear Elkie's soul and blues influences shining through, particularly her affinity with Etta James on Something's Got A Hold On Me.
It's also great to have some other 70s and 80s album tracks that have not previously made it to CD available here, along with all the classics.
It's fantastic too to have some of the Vinegar Joe tracks included in an Elkie compilation.
I missed a star because I would have liked something from the Bookbinders Kid and Inspiration albums included and perhaps Circles which I think include some of Elkie's best material.
Overall though a great CD to celebrate Elkie's 50 years as a singer/songwriter and performer.

I agree largely with both of the reviews already published. There are one or two quibbles over what has been included and what has been ommitted. It's great to hear some of Elks 60's material, which I had not heard before and is very good, as well as some Vinegar Joe.
What I wanted to draw attention to is the difference the re-mastering makes. Whilst not perfect, the extra clarity given to her most familiar material is I think revelatory. For example, I have always loved her version of Nights in White Satin, but preferred to hear it live or the orchestral version from her Amazing album. Somehow the original with its swirling synths sounded a little dated. But wow. Just listen to it now. There is textural interest and depth in the music while Elk gives a performance of thrilling intensity. Fantastic. And the same can be said for so many of the recordings in all their new shiny fresh splendour. Add to this a remastered Superstar (possibly my favourite by Elk)and you have THE essential Elkie Brooks compilation. For a ridiculously low price.

Very few artist will have the good fortune sound strong personality to be in control of their musical map, but are sadly pushed into one genre in order to `sell' - but that's generally at a price, becoming pigeon holed and out dated, the amazing thing about this lady is that she has refused to sell out or play the `management' game and could have so easily do so.
This latest cd release is demonstration as to just what you start to get, and what you get is pure 100% talent, very few singers have the ability vocal range and soul to even try such a wide range of styles.
Having played this several times I'm still astonished that one singer can then go from a heart breaking Ballard that'll will melt ice to a blues classic that seems made to measure, which follows with one of the raunchiest of rock songs ever, such as the Proud To Be a Honky Woman , then you get her covering a Pink Floyd classic such as Money, with-out question the range of material that Elkie Brooks can cover and included on this double cd is quite remarkable, but listening to her voice closing as I have been today, not surprising in fact the only surprising thing is that she's not a bigger star than she deserves
For sound fans take note the re mastering is outstanding, overall one of my best buys to date.
