Book Description

4 Aug 2003

As Diana Morrison laid the table for six at her elegant Central Park apartment, she had no warning of what was to come. Spending New Year's Eve together was a tradition for Diana, her husband Eric, and their best friends Pascale and John Donnally and Anne and Robert Smith, and as the friends sipped champagne, they talked of renting a villa together in the South of France the following summer. But life had other plans...

Just two weeks after New Year, tragedy strikes at the heart of their close circle as Robert suffers a sudden, tragic loss. Diana and Eric, Pascale and John, united in their love and shared grief, rally to his side and urge him to join them on the Riviera in August. But the ramshackle old mansion is far from the exquisite villa they had imagined, and Robert surprises them all by inviting a lovely, much-younger film actress with mile-long legs and a million-dollar smile. Diana and Pascale hate her on sight, but the men are dazzled, and amidst the crumbling furniture and glorious sunsets more surprises are in store. Old wounds are healed, new love discovered, and miracles unfold... all beneath the dazzling sun of St Tropez.

Product Description

Here's number 55 from Steel, a pleasant read focusing on the extraordinary 30-year friendship between three couples: Diana and Eric, Pascale and John, Robert and Anne. Spending New Year's Eve together, they discuss plans to holiday in St Tropez during August. A villa is rented, and as they all look forward to the summer break, tragedy strikes only two weeks into the New Year, when Anne suffers a fatal heart attack. Distraught, Robert tries to pull out of the holiday, but his friends convince him that he should still go. In time, Robert meets Gwen, a younger woman - who happens to be a Hollywood actress, and asks her to join him at the villa, to his friends' dismay. What ensues during the holiday makes for a moving novel about loyalty, friendship and love. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money! 29 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I decided to purchase this book using a free voucher as I'd read books by the same author a few years ago and generally found them well written and easy to read. I'm very glad that I didn't waste any money on this book - it was one of the worst books I've read in a long time. Yes, I did finish it, but only to see what happened in the end! Danielle Steele touches on a subject that either has been, or will become, an issue for many of us - that of the loss of one of a close-knit group of friends, their reaction to the death and, eventually, her "replacement". Unfortunately I found the grammar rather poor; indeed I found myself re-reading passages on a number of occasions as they failed to make sense the first time through. The author keeps repeating herself unnecessarily, too. From a publishing point of view, the book is printed over almost 300 pages. However, the font is so large that I'm sure production costs could have been minimised if, say, it had been kept to 200 pages. Not up to her usual standard.

5.0 out of 5 stars great holiday reading 11 Sep 2002
By A Customer
this book has you hooked from the beginning with believable charactors. I loved the way it showed all sides of the situations that arose during the story with a pleasing ending for all. The friends charactors were great making them your friends as well. My favourite charactor was the female cleaner so vividly descripted and had me laughing as i visualised her outfits. Like her other books she has you reaching for the hankies at one point and laughing at another. A book with lots of twists and I can't wait for her next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars light read 15 Sep 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Sunset in St.Tropez is not too bad but not one of her best. When Robert looses his wife it was very sad, but halfway through the story when they go on holiday it starts to get predictable. It is a light read but not as exciting and grabbing as some of her novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read 16 April 2007
By Mrs. A. M. Chadwick VINE VOICE
Another good novel by Danielle Steel.

This time her novel takes us on a journey with three couples who all know one another and what happens to their friendships and relationships.

It's a little slow to start but once I got into I did enjoy it.

It is a little shallow story wise compared to some of the other novels she's written, nether the less I enjoyed it and found it a compulsive read.
