Format: Paperback
I looked forward to reading this book, I genuinely did. However, I was mildly disturbed by the graphic depiction of childbirth in the very first couple of pages and things went slightly downhill from there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Thomas and I love every other book of hers I've read (bar the bizarre ending of 'The Potters House'). She has a knack for creating memorable characters and writing beautiful settings- but in my opinion this is sadly lacking the zest of some of her other novels.

I am also in no way a prude but I also think that there should be some kind of warning for the whole 'incest' storyline written here which left me scratching my head as to how the female protagonist seemingly accepts events by the end of the book and everything is all lovey-dovey again. As if that would ever happen in the real world... I know this is set a couple of decades ago but good grief.

If you're a first time Thomas reader I wouldn't recommend you start with this one. It may put you off her work for life! I actually read it all the way through waiting for something interesting to happen because it's rare I can just stop reading a book altogether- but sadly it didn't. A less than satisfying ending and characters one cannot relate to at all, but that's just my opinion.

I loved the first book I read by this author (The Potter's House) so wanted to read more of her work. I wasn't disappointed with this novel.

I tried to like this book but found the heroine to be a really unsympathetic character. Okay, she falls in love and is let down, mostly through her own stupidity and then uses Jamie and his family. I really wished the book had ended differently, it might have saved this and made it at least 4 stars but sadly it carried on to a rather obvious end. Do not be put off Rosie Thomas if you read this , The Kashmir Shawl is wonderful

I was given this book for Christmas from my sister. I wondered why she was giving me chick lit trash to read. Perhaps it is because I live in Wales and like to cook? I had never heard of Rosie Thomas. and I idly picked it up on boxing day. From the first page I was completely hooked. It is beautifully written. The characters are fantastically well described, and the story line has good twists and turns. I think it has good ending, and I would definitely recommend it. I gobbled it up, couldn't put in down, finished on the 27th! Would be a good one to take on holiday.

The book started of with the feeling that it may be borring, but is soon involving. And true to the quick review on the cover, the 'shocking' part, is indeed shocking, almost disturbing and continues on in a bitter-sweet fashion only in Thomas' unique way. Another excellent and enchanting read from Rosie Thomas

Format: Paperback
I've read a few of Rosie Thomas's novels and enjoyed them all. However this is the earliest of all her books that I've read and I'm glad I know that her style has evolved and improved over the years.

The story is set between 1965 and 1980 yet there is very little to anchor it within that time period - unlike Ms. Thomas's other [more recent novels]. This is a distinct disadvantage.

To me, this novel felt over-long, with too many passages of wordy description and not enough dialogue. I had trouble pronouncing the name of the "heroine" [Angharad] and by the time I was three quarters through the book, I felt little sympathy for any of the characters apart from the London businessman, Jamie [who I felt got a raw deal].

The taboo subject of incest was introduced carefully but was nevertheless shocking as the story unfolded. But what I found hard to understand was how three people could behave as they did once they had grown up and had experienced life in the "real world".

I guessed the ending and wasn't wrong about it - which was a disappointment as I was hoping for something different.

On a practical note, the book itself was quite a challenge to read as the print was very small and the paperback binding so tight, it was difficult to open wide enough to read easily.

I would like to give this more than three stars but I know how much better Rosie Thomas's novels are, and this is not in the same league.

Quite disturbing - how could the female protagonist forgive the incest storyline. Not Thomas's best
