It was a love forbidden but never forgotten

When Harry Cotton returned to Wales, Angharad Owain found paradise - despite her father's violent warnings against the Cottons of Llyn Fair. For she and Harry were in love, untouchable.

Until a shocking revelation drives Angharad to flee, pregnant and penniless, to London. There, struggling to make a new life for herself and her child, she resolves to put the past behind her, joy and heartache alike.

But neither time nor success can banish her memories. In the end, Angharad must confront the sinister shadows that lie between her and Harry - the man she will always love, but may never have ...

2.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I wasted my time 29 Oct 2009
By Nicola F (Nic) TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I looked forward to reading this book, I genuinely did. However, I was mildly disturbed by the graphic depiction of childbirth in the very first couple of pages and things went slightly downhill from there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Thomas and I love every other book of hers I've read (bar the bizarre ending of 'The Potters House'). She has a knack for creating memorable characters and writing beautiful settings- but in my opinion this is sadly lacking the zest of some of her other novels.

I am also in no way a prude but I also think that there should be some kind of warning for the whole 'incest' storyline written here which left me scratching my head as to how the female protagonist seemingly accepts events by the end of the book and everything is all lovey-dovey again. As if that would ever happen in the real world... I know this is set a couple of decades ago but good grief.

If you're a first time Thomas reader I wouldn't recommend you start with this one. It may put you off her work for life! I actually read it all the way through waiting for something interesting to happen because it's rare I can just stop reading a book altogether- but sadly it didn't. A less than satisfying ending and characters one cannot relate to at all, but that's just my opinion.

I loved the first book I read by this author (The Potter's House) so wanted to read more of her work. I wasn't disappointed with this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shocking 23 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The book started of with the feeling that it may be borring, but is soon involving. And true to the quick review on the cover, the 'shocking' part, is indeed shocking, almost disturbing and continues on in a bitter-sweet fashion only in Thomas' unique way. Another excellent and enchanting read from Rosie Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars What a great read! 7 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given this book for Christmas from my sister. I wondered why she was giving me chick lit trash to read. Perhaps it is because I live in Wales and like to cook? I had never heard of Rosie Thomas. and I idly picked it up on boxing day. From the first page I was completely hooked. It is beautifully written. The characters are fantastically well described, and the story line has good twists and turns. I think it has good ending, and I would definitely recommend it. I gobbled it up, couldn't put in down, finished on the 27th! Would be a good one to take on holiday.
