4.0 out of 5 stars A simple but effective first-level adventure: a good start!, 23 Oct 2000
This new adventure for four 1st-level players is well written, well presented and highly enjoyable. All NPCs and creatures are well described and characterized. The maps provided in this adventure book are clear; the story is simple but interesting, and it provides some possible side-variations that, for first-level PCs, are interesting without being too difficult. At the end of the adventure, PCs are likely to have advanced at 2nd-3rd level and to have gained some interesting items. The new D&D system reveals to be greatly effective.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quality 1st level adventure, 7 April 2002
By A Customer
The Sunless Citadel is a good adventure that is ideal for new D&D players, or people who want to try out 3rd edition for the first time. This adventure is also a good introduction for newbie DMs. More experienced dungeon masters will be able to incorporate this adventure into their own campaigns, but the Sunless Citadel also serves as a standalone adventure- or maybe the start of your own new series- whatever, i recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, bland and repetitive, 10 Jul 2006
By Supergnu (Copenhagen, Denmark) - See all my reviews
There are many ways to start up at Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and I thought hat It would be grat fun with a bit of old school dungeon-crawling. "The sunless citadel" is the first in a series of D&D adventures tailored to bring players from the first level and upwards.

Unfortunately this adventure is nothing but a huge and dull dungeon-crawl, furnished with all the cliches that any 12-year-old DM could think up on his way home on the scool-bus. It involves a lot of rats, goblins, kobolds and other low-level critters, and the occational "boss monster". Although there is a bit of room for role-playing, it is basically just a huge dungeon -map with encounters generously strewn across. The plot-line has potential, but without a lot of work on the part of the DM, the players still won't be to engaged in it when meetning the bad guy, after two huge levels of dungeon.

Our group of experienced gamers didn't enjoy this very much, and the fact that it took over four months of by-weekly gaming to get through, made it seem even less worth our while.

If you just want a dungeon-crawl, and can't be bothered to draw the diagrams yourself, this is just fine. Otherwise it is a complete waste of time.
