Product Description

Review

'A very 21st-century blockbuster, this has all the classic elements - nail-biting narrative, absorbing relationships, glamorous locations - with an extra shot of intelligence...Much more than a coming-of-age tale, this creates a glamorous and exciting world that is so contemporary and convincing you'll feel like a special fifth member of their group' (COSMOPOLITAN )

'With its Tequila Sunrise-coloured cover, this seems to promise some sort of antidote to the misery of dark winter evenings. It is best described as a sort of Blockbuster Plus - in this case, plus a little bit more intelligence and social and political grip than is normal....Agreeably glamorous and pageturning' (DAILY MAIL )

'Tremendous fun and scarily readable' (THE BOOKSELLER )

'In this big-hearted women's read, four women forge friendships across continents' (Andrea Henry DAILY MIRROR )

'This is an absolute treat of a read set in the uber-chic worlds of modelling, politics and international corporations and set against the glamorous backdrops of London, Los Angeles, Johannesburg and Martinque. If this sexy and intelligent debut is anything to go by, Lesley Lokko is set to be a big thing in contemporary lit' (DAILY RECORD )

'This bumper tale with a political spin tells the story of four very different women who met while at boarding school, and the friendship that binds them together' 3-Stars (WOMAN'S OWN )

'Four girls meet at boarding school, forming a bond that lasts into adulthood. With glamorous characters this blockbuster is a bit trashy, but its a juicy read' (HEAT )

'I enjoyed it hugely, not only because it is a rattling good read but because it's so refreshingly wonderfully unpretentious...I'm looking forward to her next one already' (Wendy Holden SUNDAY EXPRESS )

'Make way Jackie Collins - there's an exciting new writer on the block. (Sundowners) has glamour, forbidden love and exotic locations. What more could you ask for?' (BELLA )

'Lesley Lokko's debut novel is a tumultous mix; romance meets rites of passage drama meets political incursion' (THE LIST (Glasgow & Edinburgh) )

'Are you fed up with contemporary commercial fiction? Do you yearn for those '80s sex and shopping blockbusters, featuring the super rich bitch? If so, you'll love 'Sundowners', a first novel from Lesley Lokko..an entertaining read with a dollop of intellect' (Sue Leonard IRISH EXAMINER ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Andrea Henry, DAILY MIRROR

Wow 4 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
I started to read this book without any real expectations. But once I started to get to know the characters, I found that I couldn't put it down. Not only does it deal with politics, culture and history (especially with regards to apartheid in South Africa and the situation in Palestine which is mentioned briefly), but it combines this with characters who I felt I could really identify with. Gabby, Nathalie, Charmaine and Rianne really got into my heart, and I found myself praying for Rianne and Riitho to have a happy ending.

Don't be put off if the beginning doesn't draw you in - it took me a while to really get into the story, but it's so worth it once you do.

sundowners 26 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Sundowners is one of the best books I've ever read. It is beautifully written and very hard to put down. I strongly recommend it to everyone. I loved the variety of themes in the book including a central romance, apartheid and the love of 4 friends which lasts a lifetime. If I could have given it more stars a would have.

I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book as it is not something I would normally go for but I fancied a change and am certainly very pleased I read it. It is a wonderful story and I'd barely finished the first page and I was hooked :) I loved all the characters and felt part of the group. I like how it stretched across two decades so you could follow the group changing and growing up over the years. I would recommend this to you, and I can't wait to read Saffron Skies, the authors recently released book.
