Product Description

A Fistful of Covers May 2011. After many years of recording original material with "The Men They Couldn't Hang" Phil (Swill) Odgers fancied trying his hand at an EP of some songs by other people. These are his unique interpretations of tales of hangovers, heartbreak and hopelessness. Songs that, at one time or another, he's played during the "acoustic section" of TMTCH gigs or on family occasions... The first song, 'Sunday Morning Coming Down', was introduced to him by good friend and sometime drinking buddy Wildcat O'Mahony, who told him about a rare version that Gene Vincent once did at the Corral Club, Topanga Canyon, Ca. (U.S.A) just four months before he died in October 1971. Swill forst heard 'Fools' sung as a duet between Peter Perret of The Only Ones and Pauline Murray of Penetration back in the twighlight days of Punk. 'I'm a Lonesome Fugitive' is a song made famous by Merle Haggard but Swill adds a little twist to it here. 'The Parting Glass' is one of the most popular songs in Scotland and Ireland. The last track, 'Bottom of the World', is a Tom Waits song that Phil and his kids learned so that they could sing it together at a family Christmas get-together last year. www.twitter.com/swillodgers www.tmtch.net email:orders@tmtch.net

I've always been a fan of the voice of Phil Odgers aka Swill since hearing The Men They Couldn't Hang back in the 80's, I've seen the band a fair few times and a highlight of any TMTCH gig is the acoustic section that Swill and Cush each perform. So when I heard Swill was doing a solo acoustic EP i jumped at the chance to buy it and boy have I been rewarded.

Swills voice on this short collection is deep and mellow, with The Parting Glass being a fine example of how a simple song can send shivers down your back when sung with feeling. Overall I can't recommend this CD highly enough and am looking forward to the next recording this most under rated singer puts out

You will not regret taking a punt on this CD!!

For those of us lucky souls that are familiar with Phil Odger's (aka Swill) voice, it was always a foregone conclusion that we would buy this and also that we would love it.

For many a year Phil Odgers has been entertaining us as sometime lead singer and sometime lyricist with the Men They Couldn't Hang. He has also recorded in his own right recently as Swill and the Swagger Band. By the way if you don't have 'Elvis Lives Here' in your record collection, you really should have a quiet word with yourself.

This EP, consists of 5 beautiful covers sang by Phil with his acoustic guitar and subtle musical accompaniment. The title track, Sunday morning Coming Down, is fantastic. I listened to it at least five times before I moved onto track2!

I could ramble on and on. If you are not familiar with Phil Odgers, and not enough people are, give it a go. My only complaint with this offering is that I had hoped it would have been a full LP as we used to call them.

10/10

The other reviewers have said it all for me really. I too have followed TMTCH and their various spin offs since I was introduced to them by a college friend in the late 80s. Phil [Swill] Odgers's voice has always been a joy to listen to and yes, if anything does seem to get better with age. All the tracks on this EP are brilliant. If you are a TMTCH fan and are considering this EP I would say don't hesitate you will not be disappointed. I hope there is more to come from Swill - a full album would be great. For the already converted check out "Baby Fishlips" by Swill and Paul Simmonds [the song writing talent behind TMTCH] I finally bought it recently and cannot understand why it took me so long. As others have said Swill's voice, Paul Simmond's song writing and TMTCH in general [Cush et al] so very underrated - if there was any justice indeed ...and yes we do all know the rest. I just hope they never stop producing such quality material.

Unique voice on a great CD
Although a relative latecomer to TMTCH I quickly got hooked on them, partly due to the unique voices of both Swill and Cush. Swill's solo CD has the same appeal for me. Read more
