Product Description

Product Description

For twenty-five centuries, men have used Sun Tzu's classic "The Art of War" as a guide to conflict. In recent years, it's been a guide to climbing the corporate ladder. But "Sun Tzu for Women" shows that there re more paths to winning than frontal assault. Women can learn from the ancient Chinese strategist how to apply the feminine principle to the business world - and win every time.

Whether it's relying on networking skills to win allies or maneuvering to gain a decisive advantage, the author shows through dozens of case studies from prominent women in business how to overcome the odds, defeat opponents, and forge successful careers.

The tenets of Sun Tzu lend themselves to women's natural strengths in diplomacy and relationship-building. With this interpretation, women warriors learn to leverage these valuable assets to trump their male colleagues every tome.

Sun Tzu for Women 2 Mar 2012
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
In a new spin on an oft-studied classic, marketer and martial arts practitioner Becky Sheetz-Runkle reinterprets Sun Tzu's The Art of War for women in the workplace. The ancient Chinese warrior and military strategist penned the masterpiece about 2,500 years ago, but many business experts believe its precepts are as relevant in today's corporate environment as they were on ancient Chinese battlefields. Sheetz-Runkle extrapolates business lessons from Sun Tzu's maxims to help women build on their attributes, overcome obstacles and forward their careers. The book relies heavily on excerpts from the classic, along with the author's own pithy advice and stories of today's women who are the working world's modern generals. While much of the book's counsel is pretty well worn, getAbstract recommends women read this book to fortify themselves as they do battle in the corporate combat zone.

The perfect book to give a woman entering the workforce 23 Feb 2011
By CHill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this book! So many things resonated with me and brought me back to a time when the "filters" of my life got in the way of achieving certain goals (and filters that continue to). Just a tiny, very early gem in the book, speaks about the belief of working hard. "Women believe if they work hard enough, everything will fall into place. After all, that's only fair. Unfortunately, its a fallacy". It is a HUGE fallacy. When I graduated college I was bright eyed and excited about the future. Upon entering the workforce, I believed that working very hard, achieving results, being forward thinking and being fully dedicated, would reap financial rewards and promotion. After all, this is my team, the people I spend nearly all my time with and a boss I fully support and help look good. A thank you, pat on the back and cost of living raise was hardly appropriate given the hours and enormous value that was delivered. After the gobsmacked sensation wore off I took a more tactical approach and got a raise, promotion and bonus with hardly the fight I expected. But what a rude (and great) awakening that was for me. Sadly,I continue to see similar situations happening to friends and relatives across many sectors and positions.

I use that small example above because as soon as I read it, I felt that every young woman entering the work/battlefield arena should be given this book. However, there are MANY invaluable concepts in this book, real world examples that include amazing women (in ways I never knew before) and "Battlefield Challenge" questions that really gets the brain juices flowing. It calls you to action and that is exciting and rare for a book to be able to do. I highly recommended it!

Note: If you are a Martial Arts fan, as I am, you will find some of the MA references incredibly enjoyable.

Gave me a huge boost 1 Feb 2011
By Shirley Braley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've read ALL the "women in business" motivational books. Some helped, some didn't, most are long forgotten. But when I started reading this book, I knew it was a winner. In the bookstore I picked a page at random and started reading, it was the story about Condoleeza Rice facing down an angry Boris Yeltsin and emerging victorious. I thought, "that's the kind of strength I need". I've had enough of being intimidated by "powerful" people. Using this book, I am marshalling my own personal power in new ways.

I could easily go on and on about the lessons I've learned about myself by reading this book, but I'll just share one more idea that the author presents in the chapter "Indomitable Spirit". I quote: "... passion is critical. If you're good, you deserve to be in a position where the things you care about matter. Your passion defines who you are . . . what does your passion and how you apply it to your work say about you?"

Since I read this, I weigh my actions with a new metric. Am I using my passion to make the best choices? To best direct my energy? To be most effective as a professional? To be effective in relationships in my personal life?

There are many Sun Tzu business books and spinoffs and some are frankly superficial. But this book has deep and powerful lessons on how to live and be a top performer. In particular, it will show you a path to be the best person you can be, and find strength you might not be aware you have.

Highly recommended!

Excellent examples from successful women; great introduction to Sun Tzu's Art of War 7 April 2012
By Susanne Cardwell - Published on Amazon.com
Sun Tzu for women provided sprinkles of Sun Tzu quotes from the Art of War. The quotes were carefully chosen to articulate various points expanded on in depth by Becky Sheetz-Runkle. Capturing much sage advice as to the value of, for example, always learning new skills, gaining allies, and choosing one's battles, Becky creates a captivating read. Sheetz-Runkle also incorporates bits of feminist literature in her write-up, making for a well organized structure consisting of quotes, explanations, feminist thought/literature, and numerous feminist examples. Each major section ends with a snippet from a successful women's own journey, such as from the highly influential Condoleezza Rice. These women role models' stories serve to further entrench the applicability of the strategies of Sun Tzu.

Of special delight were Becky Sheetz-Runkle's personal stories about her martial arts background and her eventual instruction of martial arts. Her "empty the cup" story is particularly valuable for those wanting to master skills without allowing the ego to impede progress. Sun Tzu's advice not only encapsulates a thoroughly insightful work of strategy for war, but also captures what it takes to overcome self-imposed limitations. An excellent read...
