Coltrane recorded so much music in 1965 that much of it remained unreleased until after his death. Ironically,this album and First Meditations which represent the last recordings of the Classic Quartet are in my opinion the best of the lot and are only superseded by A Love Supreme. The music on Sun Ship finds Coltrane at a transitional stage,moving further towards 'free jazz,' but still with the trademark Quartet sound. Unlike some of Coltrane's later work which could be rambly and unfocused at times,these are all relatively brief pieces,and the playing throughout is diamond sharp and coherent,with the interplay between the members of the Quartet bordering on the telepathic by this stage. Coltrane's own playing is ferocious on the title track and 'Amen,' and rich and majestic on the ballad 'Dearly Beloved,'whilst 'Ascent,' following Jimmy Garrison's long intro is as catchy and accesible as anything Coltrane recorded,a real rollercoaster ride. 'Attaining' is the quietest track on the album, although still awash with waves of rhythm, and is a little reminisent of the 'Crescent' album. All in all this is a great album, despite not being that well known, and is a perfect 'sign off' from the Classic Quartet.Well worth your money if you are a Coltrane fan.

Having been into jazz for a good few years I tried listening to Coltrane countless times and never managed to 'get' it. The older records seemed quite boring, while the 'post'-Love Supreme time seemed like really 'weird' stuff. Then I went to see a tribute band and as far as I remember, apart from 'Giant Steps', 'My favourite things' and so on, they covered some of 'Love Supreme' material... This was the first time when his music (paradoxicaly played by others) actually stroke me. A few moths later, by a pure chance, I was given Love Supreme CD and it basically 'ruined' my whole attitude towards jazz music. I became obsessed with Coltrane!!! I know it will sound a bit odd but I find it VERY difficult to listen to anything else now. Other artists and records just sound silly comparing to what Coltrane came up with.
Sun Ship is such a nice piece of art, it is genius. Although it will fully absorb you and will require your complete attention for long time it will be worth it at the end. It is a fantastic album and I would recommend it to every single jazz fan.

The Sun Ship, headed straight for the molten core

Sun Ship is one of my favorite "late" Coltrane albums; this was among the last recordings made by the Classic Quartet, and strikes just the perfect balance between the burning intensity and expressionism of Ascension and the modality of earlier recordings. Coltrane's mastery over the tenor saxophone is complete here, screaming and honking with ferocity as the thundering rhythm section of Tyner and Jones pushes him forward and upward on "Sun Ship" (the agitated, tense theme of this tune is awesome) and "Amen". The prayer-like ballads, "Attaining" and "Dearly Beloved", are just as volcanic. And the closer, "Ascent", features a lengthy (but not over-long) bass solo which sets up Coltrane's entrance perfectly as he proceeds to launch into the stratosphere. This is heady music, and not for the faint at heart; but those who like A Love Supreme will find a lot of touchstones here, and some of the other factors that turn people off from late Coltrane (Pharaoh Sanders, the horn dialogues) are absent. There's just the classic four here, taking the Quartet format as far as it will go. This and the John Coltrane Quartet Plays are perfect intros to this period in Trane's music. Absolutely essential to any Coltrane collection!

Coltrane's Tribute

This album is often described as transitional, as Coltrane moved from the classic quartet to the undiluted energy music of his final phase. But it's title gives away another important aspect of these sessions. John Coltrane's was hugely influenced by John Gilmore, and even took lessons from the less celebrated virtuoso just as he was setting up the quartet. Gilmore spent his career with Sun Ra, and '65-'66 was the height of the Arkestra's awesome power. It was the time of Gilmore's most adventurous solos, making sounds that only the brilliant Coltrane could hope to emulate. It would not be the first time that Coltrane managed to harness his influences into a uniquely successful vehicle.

Coltrane at his most powerful

Although "A Love Supreme" is generally regarded as Coltrane's most emotional album, "Sun Ship" tops it in intensity and passion. The music is volatile, from lush McCoy Tyner passages and Coltrane themes, to Elvin Jones's furious percussion and Coltrane's atonal improvisation. Coltrane's solos on the title track and "Amen" are guaranteed to give you goosebumps, if you "get" his later stuff.
