Book Description

1 Jun 2006
The inter-war period saw the annual holiday become part of the lives of large numbers of people. This book explores the facets of seaside holiday - where people went, and why; how they got there; where they stayed; what they did; and what they wore. It also examines the architecture of pleasure, in the form of cinemas, piers, lidos and pavilions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fashionable subject well covered 30 July 2010
By E. Cody
The Great British Holiday is back in and this book is a rare and comprehensive study of its history and finer points. It's a fascinating subject and I bought the book because I was writng an article about it. It's not a huge tome and I think there is room for a bigger book but, rather than being a great read, its very useful to dip in and out of. Also a great memory jogger for those that used to day trip to the English Coast in the summer. I've since found two local books, one entirely on piers and one entirely on beach huts. Sun, Sea and Sand whetted my appetite for more information on these and other subjects. Having spent a few years in Croatia, working with the tourism industry there ( Croatia Cruising Companion (Wiley Nautical), it's intriguing, reading Sun Sea and Sand, to see how holiday fashions have turned full circle over a few decades.
