Book Description

4 Jun 2009 Sumomomo Momomo (Book 1)

Koushi Inuzuka is an intelligent high schooler with a lofty but 'normal' aspiration: to be an attorney and prosecute the biggest criminals in the nation. Unfortunately for him, he also happens to be the heir to an ancient family of martial artists, one of twelve powerful clans based on the animals of the Chinese zodiac...and these clans, split into two diametrically opposed factions, are about to plunge the nation of Japan into civil war!

Enter Momoko Kuzuryuu, the pint-sized but powerful heiress to the family at the head of the opposing faction. Koushi and Momoko's fathers have cooked up a plan to bring peace and unite both sides by wedding their children and producing an heir-a duty which Momoko is only too enthusiastic to fulfill. But all Koushi wants is a normal life with a normal career in law...

4.0 out of 5 stars a terrific tongue twistery tale 2 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
When 'The Strongest Bride on Earth' comes a-knocking, just how exactly do you turn her down?

Only daughter of a martial-arts bloodline, Momoko must ensure the continued strength of the clan by having a child born of a union with the strongest of males and she's totally up for it!

Koushi is the lucky chap, but he wants to pursue a life in law, having left behind his martial training years ago. He's not so keen on the idea and Momoko has her work cut out for her. Especially as other clans aren't so keen either..

The manga jumps straight into it and if you didn't know anything at all about the plot, the first two pages pretty much reveal the crux of it.

Momoko is an eager student and will do what she must to preserve the bloodline. She's tenacious like a tick but she has her own charm which comes from her honesty and faith. Koushi has a problem with violence, however, and is pursuing his own course in his studies. He's getting pushed around at the start of the manga and Momoko's entrance into his life stirs things up tremendously.

It's surprising, given the two-page intro, that the main event that the two find themselves in spreads over quite a few pages. Not that you notice the number of pages, i just happened to be flicking back through and saw that the final duel of the volume was practically the second half of the book!

I'm not really an 'action' manga fan as i generally have trouble making out what's going on in the action panels, so it's nice to have alot of character showing through and the page length pays off in this regard.
It's a little zany at times, but it fits with the tone and all in all is very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars (3.5 STARS) Life with the Strongest Bride on Earth 25 Jan 2010
By Tsuyoshi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the first volume of "Sumomomo Momomo" (complete in 12 volumes, serialized in "Young Gangan" published by Square Enix from 2004 to 2009). The manga creator is Shinobu Ohtaka and this series is her first work.

Momoko Kuzuryu (the girl on the front cover) is the only child of the Kuzuryu clan. Her father, however, fears that someday his family, renowned for their martial arts skills, will weaken and die out unless Momoko marries a suitable young man and produces an heir to the family. And he has to be a strong martial artist. Koushi Inuzuka, a son of the rival clan, is chosen (without his knowing ) and Momoko is sent to the Inuzukas. The problem is, high school student Koushi, eager to be a lawyer, is not interested.

"Sumomomo Momomo" uses a time-tested pattern of Japanese comic - for some utterly incredible reasons (alien invasion, for instance), a girl starts living with a boy or vice versa. These comics are sometimes "fan servicy" and "Sumomomo Momomo" is no exception. It includes no nudities, but a few panty shots, though the comic's greatest merit is its often silly actions and exaggerated jokes based on Momoko's near super-human skills as a girl fighter.

One big disappointment is that this volume doesn't have some of the amusing supporting characters such as a tsundere ninja girl Iroha (read Volume 2). The "class rep" (still unnamed) will be back soon (Vol. 2 again) as a much funnier character, so please keep reading the series until it finally gets better in the next volume.

The first volume begins shakily with the unnecessary serious touch in the mid-section, which looks slightly out of place here, but the book remains enjoyable throughout.

By the way, though she looks very young, Momoko is a high school student, which means she is probably 16 year old or older and has reached the legally marriageable age in Japan (with consents from at least one parent, which she already has). Interestingly, it is Koushi who CANNOT marry her because he is a male and has to wait until he is 18 year old.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and engaging martial arts love comedy 20 Dec 2011
By Charles E. Stevens - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A quick caveat: this review is for the series as a whole rather than this specific volume.

I'm a bit surprised to see the lukewarm reviews (so far at least) for this manga, as it is a personal favorite and was very popular in Japan. Ohtaka is a very gifted manga-ka, someone who has a good sense for how to balance the funny and the serious sides to her work. Sumomomo contains many standard motifs, but for me at least they do not feel cliched. The story is fast-paced and engaging, and the characters are quite diverse, interesting, and usually considerably more nuanced than first meets the eye (including the reluctant "hero" Koshi, and the seemingly indefatigable Momoko). Although there are many differences between the two works (most notably the heroes' personalities), Sumomomo feels in many ways like it takes its inspiration from Ranma 1/2 ... a little more serious, but otherwise the overall martial arts-love comedy feel is similar in a number of ways.

For people not blown away by the first volume, I'd suggest reading on a little bit further to give the story a chance to develop and the cast of characters to fill out further. If you enjoy this series, as I did, Ohtaka tops herself with her next series, Magi, which is a take on the world of the Arabian Nights. At the present, it's up to ten volumes ... if you are able to read Japanese, check it out; if not, I imagine it's just a matter of time before it's translated into English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and cute 2 July 2009

I saw the anime already and I thought it was great, but it does stop halfway through the manga series! I'm glad Yen Press decided to pick up this title, the anime stops at manga volume 6 so it'll be a while before it catches up considering the spaced release dates but it's still worth the wait. The anime was very close in plot to the manga (the deviation was minimal having read the first volume only so far).
