Peter Lovesey does not appear to get the credit this great series deserves. His detective, Peter Diamond, is a sleuth of the greatest order.

In The Summons, the third book of this series, Diamond returns to Bath and meets up with old adversaries, his ex-boss, and an escaped prisoner he was responsible for catching.

Despite his pernickety style and the cantankerous manner he adopts towards suspects, witnesses and colleagues Diamond is a genial character with one focus only, to find the answer. The plot involves a range of characters; from a faded pop star to a bunch of commune- living ‘crusties’ who all feature in Diamond’s attempt to find the truth behind a five year old murder he once was convince he had solved. Add to this the humorous tone which Lovesey applies in his writing and it is a story which becomes impossible to put down. The likeable hero fits the jigsaw of clues together until the crime is inevitably solved.

Ian Rankin’s Rebus and Wigfield’s Inspector Frost are both a similar type of police detective and I would recommend fans of these two authors to try this series as I am sure he will not fail to please.

The books can be read in any order as they stand alone as well as developing the characters within each story.

An intelligent and satisfactory book by a great author which leaves you feeling contented and convinced that Peter Diamond has made everything right in this mixed up world again. Or at least until you start reading his next book……

More crime in Bath 13 Oct 2009
By M. Stevens VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The third in the series featuring the Detective Peter Diamond, sees him return to Bath following a brief sojourn to London (covered in the disappointing Diamond Solitaire (Peter Diamond Mysteries), which could be avoided as it adds little if nothing to the series).

As with the first in the series (the excellent The Last Detective - no link available at present to the stand alone novel) the book features a plethora of characters, both savoury and unsavoury, and Diamond is faced with revisiting an old crime and conviction in order to find a kidnap victim. Many of the characters on Diamonds "side" appeared in the first book, and it would be useful, although not essential, to read this first, to understand the relationship between Diamond and his colleagues (as stated Diamond Solitaire adds little to the series - in my view, although the first and second books are both available as a double single edition The Last Detective/Diamond Solitaire).

Lovesey seems to enjoy writing about both his character and the city of Bath, and living there the description of some of the buildings and establishments is very accurate, particularly as this book was written in the early 90s and some of these buildings have now been gentrified. Lovesey is very specific about locations and it would be easy for any tourist to the city to read this after a visit and imagine they are still there.

There is a slight humour in the writing, and Diamond is one of those characters who you try and picture as to who would play him on TV (according to the Bath paper, ITV as bought the rights to a TV series) and I struggle to place him, having elements of the TV Rebus (Stott), Morse (Thaw - obviously he would not play him) and Frost (Jason).

The plot twists and turns, and the style of writing begs you to read just one more chapter. The ending is unpredictable, but holds together well. Overall an enjoyable book, a good story, set in a wonderful location, which comes to life through the writing.

Reading the books in order, it will be interesting to see how the character develops - hopefully more in this vein and less like Diamond Solitaire!

Peter Diamond is Back. 29 Nov 2003
By S. Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I can't believe that I'm the first person to review this book. For those readers who love British procedurals, I can't believe that you haven't discovered Peter Diamond! Lovesey's character is the most emgaging you will find in a month of Sundays. In this third book in the series, Peter Diamond is summoned back to Bath CID to help capture a killer that he had had put away 4 years ago. Apparently, this killer had pulled off an escape from prison, and kidnapped the daughter of a policeman high up in the CID in order to get Diamond to prove his innocence of the crime that he had put him away for. Diamond teams up with Julie Hargreaves and they manage to outwit all the CID and the Bath police force and determine that this ex-convict was indeed innocent. Then they have the job of proving who actually did the crime, and let me tell you, it was a real surprise to me. Diamond is a gem, and I love this series.
A Thoughtful Mystery Without any Red Herrings 6 May 2012
By Grey Wolffe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When Peter Diamond is awoken by two detectives from his old patch and told he's needed in Bath, Diamond is a little skeptical. It's been two years since he walked out on his job as Superintendent of the CID, and during that time he hasn't found any work that is satisfying. It seems that a murderer he put in "England's Alcatraz" has escaped and kidnapped the daughter of one of his former bosses. He took the daughter of ACC Tott off the street in central Bath where she was 'busking' with her violin. She had left home after a family spat and the story had been in the papers.

The escaped murderer (Mountjoy) had read the article in the paper and used the kidnapping of Tott's daughter Samantha (Sam) as leverage to get Diamond put back on his case. He claims he was falsely convicted and wants Diamond to take another look at the case. At the time of his arrest, he was the prime suspect and everyone else, was 'supposedly' eliminated. But did Diamond do a 'thorough' job? With the help of one of his old team of detectives he goes through the case with a fine tooth comb looking for anything they may have missed the first time around.

Lovesey does a fabulous job of finding tiny discrepancies that were easily missed during the pressure of a murder investigation when the supposed' perpetrator is already in jail. What makes this believable is that Diamond and Inspector Julie Hargreaves run into dead ends and have fruitless searches during the investigation. It doesn't go smoothly nor should it. Though there are no red herrings in the story, there is some information that the reader is not privy to, that would have made it easier to come up with the 'motive' for the murder but not the murderer. All in all a good job with a teaser at the end as to how the series will progress.
