First commissioned by the BBC in 2005 for their pre-school channel CBeebies, this charming stop-frame animated series is a timeless classic. Summerton Mill is a tumbledown watermill set in a very beautiful valley. When it rains up on the hills, the old waterwheel starts to turn, and 'a little bit of magic takes place'. Dan and his faithful companion Fluffa, Dr and Mrs Naybhur, Francoise, the spectacular yellow spinning chickens and Mousey-Tongue, the laziest cat in the world, go about their daily lives. Then, when the waterwheel slows down, and eventually stops, Summerton Mill goes back to being 'a home just to the wild animals, the birds and the plants'.

Summerton Mill - Series 1 (13 episodes)

Anyone with children should order this DVD (and if you don't have children, get it anyway!) I have been waiting for this series to come out on DVD for a long time. My son is now 6 but he still loves the stories, and quite often makes up his own, using similar looking soft toys. We managed to wear out a sample DVD some time ago. The characters are innocent and charming and the series is a welcome change to the horrible violent "childrens" programmes that are shown now. I can't wait for my (son's!!!) DVD to arrive.

I bought the DVD for my sister's children who live in Spain, so don't see any British TV. They love the series and sis has asked if there is a new series coming out. Is there? Its quieter pace and storylines had her kids entranced and even asking questions afterwards! The stop frame animation reminds me so much of Pogles Wood and Camberwick Green. Far better than the inane noise that most kids get thrust upon them these days. I'd recommend it highly.

After finding it hard to find anything 'savoury' for my toddler to watch, Summerton Mill was like a breath of fresh air!

Summerton Mill takes me back to my own childhood with its benign stories, innocence, great friendships and a few good morals thrown in for good measure. Instead of many of today's fractious programmes that hype children up, this is laid back; you feel like you're lying on a hammock on a warm sunny day.

The DVD is 21st Century stop-frame animation. Filming takes place on a model set where the characters are moved from position to position in minute increments, with a still image taken in each position. When these frames are viewed rapidly in succession, the characters are brought to life in a way that is characteristic of many of the older classic children's television series such as Bagpuss, Camberwick Green and the Magic Roundabout.

My favourite character is the rather lazy Mousey Tongue; a large grey cat who does little but sleep in the sun all day. The chickens are delightful balls of feathers with legs that squeak. Dr Naybhur is a wonderful man who often `feels a song coming' and whisks out his acoustic guitar to entertain his friends and then there are the Millfreaks; a cross between a rabbit and hedgehog who scuttle around the place defending their territory. And I cannot forget Francoise, a cow who moos with a French accent!

Do yourself a favour and get hold of a copy of this DVD. It exudes warmth, affection and every character and scene is infused with love. It's truly delightful and in today's fast-paced world you will do you and your children a great service by slowing down at the waters edge of Summerton Mill from time to time.
I'll let you into a secret, my daughter is now nine, but Mum still adores this DVD and watches it at any excuse!

Classic British tots programmes 'like they used to make'. Everything you want from a Pre-Schooler series. Up there with Oliver Postgate and the rest.

I've personally found that in recent years, children's TV has really taken a dive towards unintelligent, colourful, strange noised programs. In my youth I remember that the kids programs weren't dumbed down so that all was left was strange aliens grunting "Fish" and "More! More". I remember lovable characters speaking full English and having fun adventures.

Summerton Mill really harks back to those golden days and I, for one, wish this was the norm still. This show is something you can sit down and watch with your child or even watch on your own. It's a show your child could grow up with and still gain from for years to come. It's a shame the show was cancelled on TV but thanks to the beauty of the internet, there is no need for it to have a broadcasting slot.

I cannot recommend this DVD more as it's a, soon-to-be, timeless classic. And if Francoise the French cow doesn't tickle you and your child's funny bone then I'll eat my metaphoric hat.

Summerton Mill is a genius creation. A true piece of gentle heart warming children's viewing. I first saw Summerton Mill through CBeebies and contacted the creators to see if a DVD was available. I was thrilled to find it is now available to buy. My children watched this DVD 5 times nearly straight through one cold and rainy Saturday when they were feeling tired. They are 4 year old twins and massive Summerton Mill fans.

I must admit to being the biggest fan in the house though, it is reminiscent of Bagpuss and other classic children's television. Dr Nayber's song is my absolute favourite and never fails to make me smile - a true delight that I would recommend to absolutely anyone! I know this would be a popular choice for Grannies to have at their houses as it is gentle and so much less hyper than a lot of other current programmes.

I can't wait for the second series.

Put simply, Summerton Mill can be mentioned in the same breath as such children's TV classics as The Herbs, Ivor the Engine, Trumpton and Captain Pugwash without feeling silly - it really is that good.

It harks back to an age before children's TV was merely a series of extended toy commercials aimed at emptying parents' pockets at Christmas time - its about entertainment, not merchandising.

If you want to get a flavour of the series, then imagine a classic stop-frame childrens show like The Pogles mixed with a dash of "Creature Comfort"-styled humour.

The BBC dropped the series a couple of years ago (although it is still going strong in other countries) in attempt to "update" its image, replacing it with a load of "hi-energy" imported series from the US aimed at tartrazine-fueled, hyperactive infants. May they hang their heads in shame.
