4.0 out of 5 stars Beside the seaside 28 July 2005
By Colin C
Format:DVD
The poster in his room says 'Definitely Maybe', and Gaspard, on holiday in St Malo on the Brittany coast, just can't make up his mind. He has the attention of two beautiful girls, but his indecision means he may foolishly end up with neither. The three lead actors in this gorgeous little film all deliver wonderfully natural, unaffected, believable performances - which is crucial in a heavily conversation-based film.

Once again, Eric Rohmer's work is unlike anything any other film maker would have come up with. The location, St Malo, is almost one of the characters, it is brought so much into the action. By the end you may well, like me, want to be walking along the old battlements and along the beaches yourself.

As ever, this is one for people who enjoy slow paced and talky films, but if that's the case with you, then don't hesitate to get this one. The tone throughout as Rohmer gently explores the emotional uncertainties and insecurities of his characters, is thoughtful and understated. All in all, this is a very good film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film that will appeal to Rohmer fans 16 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is a typical Rohmer movie exploring what appears to be average people going through average experiences. And how well he does it! A young man goes to the Seaside and meets a young woman. Theres no need for special effects or eroticism to tell a simple story of , well does love happen or not? To be honest it doesn't matter its an absorbing story, the young man could be me or you (well 20 years ago it could have been me!). I've met young women like that and spent all our time talking and not going anywhere. Then it didn't matter.

The story is well shot and the actors perform in a most natural way. The way in which there is an almost washed out effect to the film adds to the atmosphere by reminding me of those old postcards at the seaside.

I have watched many Rohmer movies and look forward to the next one, I haven't seen a bad one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful film... 14 Aug 2006
Format:DVD
"A Summer's tale" is the story of a young man and three women. All in all, not much happens, but I simply couldn't help finding this film engaging. The dialogues are beautiful, specially in some scenes, for example when one of the characters says that he can communicate well with others, but that he is not sure of being really himself when interacting with a lot of people.

The main character is a young musician named Gaspard (Melvil Poupaud). Gaspard doesn't know what to do, or whom he would like to be with. He thinks he is in love with capricious Lena (Aurelia Nolin), and goes on holidays to Dinard hoping to find her there. At Dinard, Gaspard meets a young waitress who also happens to be an ethnologist, Margot (Amanda Langlet). Margot quickly becomes his friend, and introduces him to Solene (Gwenaëlle Simon), an attractive and outgoing woman that Gaspard begins to date. Things become complicated when Lena arrives to Dinard, at the same time Gaspard is dating Solene and he realizes he has feelings for Margot. What can a charming but indecisive man do? Well, watch this film and discover it!

On the whole, I can say that I loved "A Summer's tale", the third film in Eric Rohmer's "Four Seasons" cycle. In a nutshell, it is beautiful film, the kind that makes you forget you are watching a movie and turns you into part of whatever is happening. I can only hope that "An Autumn tale" is nearly as good!
