This collaboration is a genuine experiment for Momus. Being an artist best known for his wit, charm and lyrical genius, it comes as quite a shock to find lyrical content someway back in the mix. Thanks to the beauty of Anne Laplantine's music this is no bad thing. The quiet fuzz and chimes of her compositions are the real star here. As a hardened Momus fan it has been difficult to look at this work objectively; I buy Momus records mainly for the lyrics, however, I have grown to really like the album. Here Nic's voice slips in and out of coherence, and in and out of different languages; leaving snippets of folk wisdom, unconnected ballads, and montages of pure vocal melody. The Wickerman/fake-folk theme holds the short passages together, and when played as a whole offers up a strange journey that I have found myself treading many times. In short, be prepared for a diversion from core Momus values, but enjoy the trip for its difference. With Momus writing new material, which from the samples on his website, return to more familiar territory, it's been fun for the time being to take a short vacation to Summerisle.
