5.0 out of 5 stars A much needed work.., 27 July 2009

This review is from: The Summer Soldiers: 1798 Rebellion in Antrim and Down (Paperback)
As an Irish person from the Nationalist tradition in Ireland , the 98 rebellion has always interested me. Before I found this , I had read Pakenham's popular narrative history of the rebellion , but this book intstantly attracted me , as I am from the area in which the events described by Stewart took place.
As I understand it , Stewart is regarded as having a hint of a unionist slant to his writing , and whether or not that is the case , I found his account and analysis to be cogent , balanced ( in large part ) , full of local detail , with an almost hour-by-hour narrative , and , most importantly , relevant . Having grown up among the lanes , hedgerows and market towns described here , and as a former student at Queen's in Belfast , where Stewart was a large presence , the book has a special resonance for me. A poignant tale of men who came from the great free-thinking Presbyterian tradition , and had the courage to assert those principles in arms , in the fateful summer of 1798. Summer Soldiers indeed...

5.0 out of 5 stars One mistey morning, the Irish lost their freadom, 31 May 2000

This review is from: The Summer Soldiers: 1798 Rebellion in Antrim and Down (Paperback)
Step by step the planned revolution unfolds. The Irish, preparing pikes, organizing, and plotting betrayal against themselves.

Treachery and battle. Summer soldiers is a sometines exausting account of the failed rebellion against the Ascendancy.

This really is a minute to minute account of what happened.

That is this books best quality. It's so detailed it's hard to really accept. But the footnotes are there, and they reveal not only a failed rebellion (that is still relevant to the IRA and the RUC) but the details of how mass planning under duress comes together....and falls apart.

Essential for any student of Irish HIstory. Essential for anyone who needs to understand the rebelious masses. Essential to anyone interested in contemporary Irish politics.

This was the event that created todays nightmare in Ireland.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true account of that momentous year in the Irish history., 26 Sep 2010
By Vivek K. Sarawgi - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Summer Soldiers: 1798 Rebellion in Antrim and Down (Paperback)
A very well reasearched book. It deals with that momentous year that changed Ireland for years to come. The locations are well described and even today one can go to these places and see for themselves the actual location as the events unfolded. A must read for any one interested in Irish history. The united Irishmen were united against Britain for Freedom.
