A much needed work.., 27 July 2009
This review is from: The Summer Soldiers: 1798 Rebellion in Antrim and Down (Paperback)
As an Irish person from the Nationalist tradition in Ireland , the 98 rebellion has always interested me. Before I found this , I had read Pakenham's popular narrative history of the rebellion , but this book intstantly attracted me , as I am from the area in which the events described by Stewart took place.
As I understand it , Stewart is regarded as having a hint of a unionist slant to his writing , and whether or not that is the case , I found his account and analysis to be cogent , balanced ( in large part ) , full of local detail , with an almost hour-by-hour narrative , and , most importantly , relevant . Having grown up among the lanes , hedgerows and market towns described here , and as a former student at Queen's in Belfast , where Stewart was a large presence , the book has a special resonance for me. A poignant tale of men who came from the great free-thinking Presbyterian tradition , and had the courage to assert those principles in arms , in the fateful summer of 1798. Summer Soldiers indeed...
