The following is a copy of my review of the VHS version of this film but the duration of both at approx 96 minutes indicates that it is the same cut:-

This film is an unashamedly romantic dramatisation of an unashamedly romantic short story called "The Apple Tree" by the early 20th century writer John Galsworthy (of "Forsyte Saga" fame).

A middle-aged lawyer from London and his wife are touring the Devon country lanes by car whilst on holiday in the years just prior to the First World War. They stop for the wife to set up her easel and paint. The man goes for a short stroll, he breasts the top of a hill and suddenly he recognises the scene in front of him. He has been here before. Twenty five years before, as a very young man on a walking holiday during the long vacation from university, he came this way also by chance. His mind races back, recalling how he injured his ankle and stayed at a farm house in this very valley all those years ago and he recalls Megan the orphaned country girl who lived and worked there and how she had been his first love and how...

I am not going to spoil the story for anyone who has not read the book or seen this film. I first experienced this story as a BBC Radio 4 afternoon play back in the early 1970s and I was struck by the strong simple story telling then. I saw this film in 1988 when it was released in UK cinemas (none too successfully in terms of box office I think). I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it again recently when I viewed an old VHS copy.

This film is faithful to all the key elements of the plot of the John Galsworthy original and the characters come over in a very convincing manner.

This film made a big image on my mind since I only saw it once, and remembered it that it was a "one to buy" should it ever come out on DVD. It's been a long wait.

I give this film 5 stars, especially based on the ending which I won't spoil, but it you want your girlfriend / wife to have a weepy film ending, this is it. If you're expecting a fast paced film, move onto another film, because this is not one of them.

The four stars I give for the DVD itself. Making allowance that it is not in PAL because it's in a different DVD region, the DVD was made with anamorphic flag switched on, so the picture stretches in all directions to a 16x9 frame, but the film was shot in approx 4x3 TV size frame. Checking the DVD on a computer reveals the DVD appears to have been correctly coded, but an anamorphic flag set to on. If you player can override this, the film will display properly. Another reviewer also mentioned this problem.

The sound is okay, don't expect miracles from such an old film, there is no full surround sound on this and won't give a sound system a workout. Picture quality is okay, could be better, but that also might be because it's not in PAL size. The subtitles are able to be switched off so you can watch without them (why are they on by default?)

If you remember the film, then this DVD is worth getting, if only because for some stupid reason, it's not been made in Britain / in PAL, despite it being a British film.

Like the other reviewers, I often researched over the years to see if this film had been released on video or dvd . It was seldom shown on TV. I was very pleased therefore to see this issue. I was also very happy to find that my fond memory of this poignant story was not misconceived.

The background to the tale is told by another reviewer at length so suffice to say it is a very moving story that is well acted with the countryside playing its role.

In its enjoyment, the whole adds up to so much more than the parts. This may have a lot to do with the fact that like most succesful stories it shares with the viewer some aspect of their own experience. In this case it is the the way chance can shape our lives and loves.

Forget any quibles over the dvd aspect ratio raised by other reviewers.I did not experience any and I suspect the power of the experience will outweigh any perceived problem in this respect. Buy the film and don't forget the tissues.

I long wanted to have this film. Eventually, looking for it in England, I found it. The story is wonderful. It could be any man's dream to find love in such a pastoral prolific scenery.
But why did they not produce this dvd in England? And such poor quality?? The aspect ratio does not fit my TV or player, so part of the picture is missing. And then for 13£ it is a bit steep.
However on the PC it looks fine, but it is different.
I would expect this masterpeace at least in PAL on dvd and in Blu Ray. But why with Korean subtitles, it is completely opaque to me.
An other one I want on dvd is "Providence" with Dirk Bogarde and John Gielgud. A mystery also, why such masterpeace is not available.. Or should I look in bloody old China...

I've loved this movie since it first came out but this disc is subtitled in Korean, not English and that is a bummer for me. The soundtrack is in English so why not the subtitles? But it is a beautiful film and (let's keep this between ourselves) I've had a crush on Imogene Stubbs from the first time I saw this.
