I saw this movie at my local theater in Brooklyn, NY, when I was 11 years old.
It was the summer of 1963, just a few months before the assassination of President Kennedy. I had been for some time completely in love with the beautiful young English actress Hayley Mills. Just thinking of that time still makes me happy after all these years. As for the film itself: The acting and singing are fine, the story moves along at a good clip without ever taxing or stressing the viewer, and it's all very enjoyable. Like a valentine from the long-gone innocent days of childhood.

It's great to have a good old fashioned film, and enjoy it. Hayley Mills is a brilliant artist and her films are always captivating. Good for children and good for adults too, - that's what I like about her. Summer Magic is one of those films that takes a family misfortune and then brings out the best in some person to be able to help put it right again. Fantastic. I wish there were more films that made people better again!

I bought this DVD for my younger brother who had it on VHS.We both saw it as youngsters at the movies and I owned the soundtrack album.I later passed this to my brother.Somewhere in the 80's he purchased the VHS and always lamented the fact that the song 'On The Front Porch' was missing from it.He maintained that as the picture of the house with everyone sitting on it was on the soundtrack cover it was not very short of criminal that it was omitted from the video.Anyhow before I gave it to him I had to watch it for old times sake and although sugary it still stands up as something that is missing today and that is good wholesome entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

Widow Dorothy McGuire has to grab her three kids and leave their neat home for a dilapidated house in Maine. Cue songs and eight hundred weight of syrup as Hayley Mills, Burl Ives and co work out this Disney adaptation of Kate Douglas Wiggin's novel Mother Carey's Chickens. Yes a family film that is as safe as the house that Dottie and brood do up, yes I understand it's a kids film, and a musical to boot. But the screenplay from Sally Benson is as dull as dishwater and the cast are way too animated. Particularly Disney's safe card, Miss Mills. The songs from Robert and Richard Sherman are barely memorable, except for the Ives warbled Ugly Bug Ball. While the Technicolor looks off and not in keeping with the Disney stamp of quality.

Harmless is fine, most musicals are just that. But there's a ream of far better harmless musicals than this one. Certainly ones that involve the audience all the way thru the running time. Whatever the age and sex of the viewer may be. 3/10

This film takes you back to days goneby. This is not for everyone as there is no great story involved. Everyone knows what Haley Mills is like but I particularly like Burl Ives singing the 'Ugly Bug Ball'.

I was just in the mood to watch a light-hearted, pleasing to the eyes and ears, Disney film, and this is exactly what I got when I watched this dvd. Old fashioned Disney as it's best, a simple but nice 'family' story, a few catchy sing-a-long tunes, young Hayley Mills, and Burl Ives. Wonderful! If you like that kind of a film, this one comes fully recommended. Great quality family entertainment dvd.

This film is very old and makes it seem a bit dated but anything with the Disney touch seems to delight new and old fans alike the most famous song writes for Disney have worked there magic here but I must say one or two aren't right for the type of singer as the mother sings song on the step of thenew house which sound very whining but on the whole a great film.

Hayley fans will like this film and add to their collection other may favour to rent then buy if liked but I would recomend this film as a starting point for any colletion.

This film is all about a family who have fallen on hard times and move to Maine USA from Boston USA it is almost two hours long isn't a fast moving story it moves at a sleepy country pace.

If your looking for action and Hayley check out In Search of the Castaways also advalible form Amazon.co.uk

My niece learnt the song The Ugly Bug Ball for her school concert and loved it. Ever since she wanted the song and video ever since. Good Buy.
