I heard someone discussing this series on the radio. They were saying how funny it was so I thought I would check it out on Youtube.
It was on there that I first discovered Jonah, the Tongan (puck you sir) breakdancer. Hilarious. Intrigued, I checked out a few more links and decided I had to buy the dvd for myself.
If you cross High School Musical with Summer Bay what do you get? Well you get Summer Heights High.
Most of the other reviewers have pretty much covered the characters involved. For me, it was the reactions of the other actors, genuinely trying to keep a straight face as the genius Chris Lilley played out his roles of Jonah, Ja'ime and the mincingingly camp Mr G.
This is not laugh out loud comedy. No, it it much better than that. I could barely take my eyes off Chris Lilley, so convincingly does he portray all those human emotions which make comedy what it is.
The highlights for me, were Ja'ime having a massive tantrum when she demands her mother collect her fromt he school. Scheming, manipulative and so like totally blackmailing. Jonah,s Tongan rap where you can see the guy playing the drums can barely keep it together he is laughing so much.
Any clips featuring Mr G's dancing are a great laugh. I can see that I will have to watch this dvd over and over again to catch all the bits you miss. The extras who appear to be genuine schoolchildren can be seen trying to keep a straight face in many of the scenes too.
All in all, I reckon you owe it to yourself to add this dvd to your collection. Chris Lilley is quite simply a one off. It has been a revelation to me just how funny Australian comedy can be. I also love Kath and Kim and the one and only irreplacable Bob Downs but sadly he does not seem to have a dvd out.
Buy this dvd and get a nice warm fuzzy feeling. It is also very touching in parts and can move you to tears.
