Reviews

Summer Heights High, written by and starring Chris Lilley (We Can Be Heroes: Finding The Australian of the Year), is the award winning Australian mockumentary series starring three of the funniest protagonists--all played by Lilley-- to hit our screens in years.

The effeminate, yet megalomaniacal, Greg Gregson--aka 'Mr G'--is the self-appointed "Director of Performing Arts", passionate about his "innovative" teaching methods and determined to write his own "Arena Spectacular". Summer Heights High is the third school in eighteen months for Jonah Takalulah, a teenager with Attention Deficit Disorder and problems with aggression. His best hope is to avoid being expelled, but he says he’s "not dumb" he’s just "choosing not to be smart at the minute." Private school exchange student Ja'mie King is struggling to cope away from her privileged background at "like, the boganist school ever."

If you enjoyed the likes of Kath and Kim,, you’ll love Summer Heights High.

Summer Heights High, a typical (and fictional) Australian state high school, is the stage for this remarkably funny and insightful mockumentary from the immensely talented Chris Lilley. Playing all three of the lead characters, Lilley manages to be utterly convincing as each, and will leave viewers shaking their heads in wonder at his precise delineation of these very diverse roles.

Jamie (pronounced Ja-may) King, (and formerly seen in We Can be Heroes), is a spoilt private school senior, chosen for a social experiment in which she will swap places with a student from a public school and spend a term seeing how the other half lives. Grotesquely conceited, manipulative and bitchy, Jaime soon joins the cool clique and runs riot socially. It's a fantastic parody, although the cringe-worthy self-absorbtion of Jaime (and indeed all her gang of willing followers) will be so familiar to anyone who's attended high school that calling it a parody is perhaps misleading.

Mr G (watch out for the reveal of his first name) Gregson is the school's (junior) drama teacher. He's sexually ambiguous (OK, camp as a row of tents), ethically disgraceful and utterly hilarious - and perhaps the least qualified human ever to grace the classroom. He's about 1% as intelligent or talented as he believes himself to be, but compensates for this with an monumental ego and a firm belief in the total inferiority of everyone around him - culminating in writing a full-scale production based entirely around himself.

But it's Jonah Takalua, the trouble Year 8 Tongan student who is Lilley's masterstroke.

One of the most eminently quotable comedy shows, Summer Heights High is an inspired mockumentary which is totally deserved of its cult status. Chris Lilley's three protagonists are each hilarious in their own way but the series really shines thanks to the comedian's portrayal of a fame-hungry drama teacher, Mr G. At times the humour can pretty controversial but is always delivered with tongue firmly in cheek. A great series!

Summer Heights seems like the perfect high school. It has the clique-iest of cliques, the campest of drama teachers, the the best bullys! Chris Lilley is just pure genius, you will find yourself laughing at just about everything in this brilliantly improvised programme. I bought this DVD from an australian website, and it has a bonus disc over over 5 hours of extras, it was well worth getting an import, it was actually cheaper and available to order now! I got my copy this morning and I have just finished watch it all. Pure.comic.genius.

Eight 30 minute episodes, expertly structured so that, once you have started watching you just have to go on.

The stories of the three characters, played with astonishing authority by Mr. Lilley, interweave throughout each episode, each more compelling than the last. What amazed me was how different each character was and yet how totally believable: when watching him as Jonah, it is hard to believe that it is the same actor who also inhabits Ja'mie and Mr. G.

As well as being extremely, sometimes shockingly funny, with plenty of quotable lines, the series has more heart than most comedy these days. The relationship between the disruptive Jonah and his remedial reading teacher is deeply touching, beautifully played. All the supporting performances in the series are excellent and authentic.

The second dvd in this set is packed with deleted scenes for all three characters - fascinating, though lacking the brilliant narrative force of the final programmes.

Utterly brilliant!

This is, quite simply, the funniest television show i have ever seen. If you like it bitchy, biting and savagely funny you might like this. I watched it the first time in disbelief- i had never seen anything so unique and original before. EVER!

Sorry to compare it with The Office but for people that want a quick idea of what SHH is, then this is my view. I can't say it's better but SHH cuts more to the bone when it chooses to and seems more of a mockumentary than The Office was where as sometimes it lost the plot device. SHH's main lead plays 3 roles Mr G a camp meglomaniacal drama teacher, Jai'me a private school transfer student who is too shallow for hell and lastly Jonah the Tongan misfit who goes to a special part of the school within Summer Heights High.
SHH will connect with people as I knew people like Jonah and Jai'me and also the teachers. Everybody is amazing in this, there is not one bad actor in fact the background characters are the best I have ever seen.
The teachers are great and spot on and the kid's... man! They do not seem like they are acting at all!
Bottom Line SHH takes the mess out of life and society and is the only mockumentary that mixes comedy and drama seemlessly thus making it one of the best.
