5.0 out of 5 stars An adventure story which lifts the spirit., 17 Oct 2000
By Ms. R. English (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Summer of the Hawthorn (Paperback)
Summer of the Hawthorn is a thought provoking book which tells the story of two women who share the name Deidre but who live 15 centuries apart. It is both an adventure story and one which lifts the spirit.

Deidre Weston returns to her native Ulster to arrange her mother's funeral and clear out the house where she spent an unhappy childhood. Following the death of her much loved father when she was nine, her strict mother had tried to stamp out any traces of joy or creativity. She has been plagued by moments of black despair all her life and, alone in the house, she finds it all too much and runs out to the garden. There she meets a strange young woman with unusual clothes who speaks in a language unknown to her. During the course of that summer Deidre meets her 5th Century counterpart several times and slowly learns her story. Deara, as she calls herself, starts as a slave but lives to fulfil a far greater destiny. By the end of the summer Deidre has learnt the healing power of stories and finds the inner strength to carry on with her life.

What lifts this book above the level of other stories is the way it compares the strife of 5th century Ireland with that of the "Troubles" of the 20th century. Deara lived in an unsettled time when the power of the druids was beginning to be replaced by Christianity. The different tribes were hovering on the brink of civil war, with only the threat of an impending Viking invasion to hold them together. Deidre lives her modern life against the background of road blocks manned by soldiers and familiar places blown apart by bombs. Both stories end with hope for a more peaceful future.
