..'Roasted Cheese' & 'Baked Cheese Sandwiches' are my favourites at any time!

From the back cover:

'First published in 1955 Summer Cooking is a selection of dishes for table, buffet and picnic that are light, easy to prepare and based on seasonal ingredients.
Elizabeth David shows how an imaginative use of herbs can enhance even the simplest meals, whether egg, fish or meat, while her recipes range from a simple salade Niçoise to strawberry soufflé......'

And from the lady herself:
"By Summer Cooking, I do not necessarily mean cold food; although cold dishes are always agreeable in summer, at most meals, however hot the weather, one hot dish is welcome, but it should be a light one, such as a very simply cooked sole, an omelette, a soup of the young vegetable which is in season - something fresh which provides at the same time a change, a new outlook......."

The book opens with a useful guide to keeping and using fresh herbs.
Then follow the simply titled chapters:

* Hord d'oeuvre & Salads
* Soups
* Eggs
* Fish
* Meat
* Poultry & Game
* Vegetables
* Sauces
* Sweets
* Jams, Jellies and Other Preserves
* Buffet Food
* Improvised Cooking for Holidays & Weekends
* Picnics

along with 'Conversion Tables', and a full index.

Overall, 234 pages full of information and recipes, broken up with just the chapter opening black and white illustration.
Recipes are often more than one to a page and carry over on to a second.

Though not considered one of her classics, this book has great recipes, especially for vegetables, and, inspite of its title, is invaluable all year round.

Classic, practical recipes that work and are as good to read about as they are to use, Elisabeth David never fails.
