Book Description

7 Nov 2005
Lucy White can't quite believe what's happened to her happy, ordinary life. Ending up homeless - not to mention husbandless - has come as an almighty shock. All she wants to do is lie low for a while, but when she arrives in a quiet street in South London she's in for a surprise. The residents of Farewell Square are anything but quiet. There's a housewife with a secret that needs to be shared, a publicist whose behaviour outside office hours would shock his clients and an artist who can't seem to control her lodgers. They're as intrigued by Lucy as she is by them, and as she's drawn into their midst, she realises that life can be kind as well as cruel. And that no one has to be lonely if they don't want to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Yarn of life in a cul-de-sac (or City) 9 April 2006
Format:Hardcover
Having read all her previous books, I had great expectations for Summer in the City and it did not disapoint. Although it was not what I expected!

Now Pauline can create such great character's as previous books have proven and this is no exception. The difference this time is that there are 4 or 5 plots running simultaniously without them knowing they are all joined.

The key strentghs to the story and the writing is the emotion driven through the circumstances of the plot and the ability for you to move from laughter to tears and back again in a single page.

It is a real page turned and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a real character based story of life. As ever the author has given us some moral content to consider with real life situations we all can relate to.

The style of the story surprised me, but it made the book more enjoyable as I knew when the story was at it's lowest (emotionally) there would be a time when a smile would return to the character involved (and me of course).

I only wish that I could have seen the paintings !

5.0 out of 5 stars Chick-lit? Never! 24 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I was amazed to see that this has tags as chick-lit, as I always assume that means a modern romantic story. This book has love and sorrow of many kinds leavened with a good dose of humour, and a very satisfying conclusion. I won't give away any of the story - I will just say read it,and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did

3.0 out of 5 stars more serious look at life 3 April 2008
Format:Paperback
great story but didnt have the wit and laughs of her previous novels and it was set in london and not ireland which disappointed me. story of the arrival of lucy in a cul-de-sac where are group of people are going thru a life changing experience and how her arrival changes the peoples lives.

slightly disappointed as it wasnt what i expected but she is still a great writer and you start to care for the characters.
