If you are susceptible to the insouciant and voluptuous charms of the Viennese waltz, this is the disc to have. Unlike previous reviewers, I do not mind the fact that the programme is a mix of vocal and orchestral numbers when both are performed this well: despite my pleasure in Sumi Jo's honeyed tones, I am equally taken by the manner in which the Volksoper orchestra plays the Overture from "Die Fledermaus" - sheer delight; all Schlag, no Schmaltz, just Schwung!
I wonder if there has been a more sheerly, intrinsically beautiful lyric soprano in modern times than Sumi Jo; in my recollection, only Kathleen Battle could rival her in this repertoire. It is simply a gorgeously even, rounded, golden-toned instrument without a hint of strain in the stratosphere. Her German is idiomatic, her vibrato a mere flicker, her trill flawless, her pianissimo breath-taking and her control and agility things of wonder.
A disc which deserves to be better known and is perhaps neglected as "easy-listening" when in fact it's nothing less than life-enhancing.
