Product Description

CD Description

The second of the two Gilbert & Sullivan re-releases this month from TER, is Sullivan & Co - The Operas That Got Away - a collection of rare and unreleased Arias, Duets and Ensemble pieces from the operas of Sir Arthur Sullivan.

After the death of G.S. Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan carried on writing operas with various other librettists. None of the resulting operas was recorded, either wholly or partly. TER Records take great pride in announcing the World Premier release of Arias, Duets and Ensembles from the canon including The Martyr of Antioch, Ivanhoe, Haddon Hall, The Chieftan, The Beauty Stone, The Rose of Persia and The Emerald Isle.

The music for this recording is rightly performed by English opera Stars who are renowned and acclaimed for their performances of Gilbert and Sullivan. They are Valerie Masterson, Frances McCafferty, Gillian Knight, Arthur Davis, Richard Suart and Gareth Jones. The National Symphony Orchestra is conducted David Steadman. Recorded in Digital Dolby Surround Sound at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Interesting Novelty 10 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Many listeners must have wondered what Sullivan's more "serious" works sounded like. This recording was specially made as opposed to "highlights" from longer works and gives a glimpse of his output outside the world of the "Savoy" operas. Apart from "Ho Jolly Jenkin!" from "Ivanhoe", there are three stirring numbers in "In days of Old"("Haddon Hall"), "The Gay Hussar" ("The Chieften") and "I Care Not If The Cup I Hold" ("The Rose of Persia). The Melody in "When the Budding Bloom of May" is delightful (dreadful lyrics though - the "moon"/ "june" school of rhyming is not of the highest order!). "If you wish to appear as an Irish Type" from "The Emerald Isle"is a great parody of the sort of person who would make a study of his "Irishness" and Sullivan had fun putting in "typical" Irish-jig-like allusions. This is a disc which is fun to listen to on car journeys and certainly worth checking out if you have an interest in what Sullivan wrote when not working with Gilbert. It is a quirky collection that makes one wonder what the rest of the works are like. It is certainly worth a listen and I am glad that someone decided to resurrect these buried works - the musicologists will probably sniff but I like it anyway!

Interesting to hear the transtion from "operetta" to "musical" on this album. "Emerald Isle" seems more like "Brigadoon" than any of Sullivan's previous work (even though most of the orchestration is by Edward German). Not sure nonetheless whether Prof Bunn's remark about red hair would now be condemned as racist!

A sampler for other "Sullivan without Gilbert" offerings, which I may invest in over the coming months.

Still Gasping for Breath: Why don't we have more CDs like this? 16 Oct 2010
By Aronne - Published on Amazon.com
I lavish praise on this disc simply for existing. Every one of the excerpts included is fabulous! I only weep that (presumably) the budget disallowed any further recordings whether on this disc or on another. If you like Gilbert and Sullivan, you'll love this CD as well. Even if you don't have much experience with G&S this disc is worth considering.

The music is wonderful. Though "When the budding bloom of May" might at first appear to be a rip-off of the Ruddigore madrigal ("When the buds are blossoming"), it is of a very different feel, sending shivers of a distinctly different type down the spine. Sadly, Frances McCafferty's voice doesn't layer well over Gillian Knight's, and there are two points in this recording that sound a little funny. From the rollicking "Let us lead a life of pleasure" (The Gay Hussar) to the introspective "On the heights of Glentaun" the music presented is fabulous.

One song deserves a special mention, however. "`Come away,' sighs the fairy voice" is the most singly thrilling song I can think of at the moment. With Valerie Masterson as the soprano, backed up by Arthur Davies, Richard Suart and a very capably choir, the performance conveys that Sullivan's musical abilities didn't end with The Grand Duke. He was going strong to the end.

The performances are overall, very good. All of the singers understand the medium very well. Gillian Knight and Valerie Masterson are not as perfect-sounding as they once were, but both (particularly the latter) are still spectacular singers. I wouldn't have anyone else! As I mentioned, Frances McCafferty's voice sounds funny here and there (something of an edge) and Arthur Davies is a bit..."bouncy" at times, if you will. Gareth Jones is the next best thing after Donald Adams; his voice is magnificent. Richard Suart shows us how well he can sing outside of the "patter" realm, though his second song "If you wish to appear as an Irish type" from the Emerald Isle, is indeed a patter song, and one of the very best too. And Suart does it justice.

What else can I say? The recording quality is excellent, and there is no reason any G&S should *not* buy this disc. I will treasure this disc for a long, long time!

The old listing of this CD may have it available for less.
