The record company Hyperion have been very active in recent years recording Sullivan's lesser-known works. Firstly it was THE GOLDEN LEGEND, then THE PRODIGAL SON and BOER WAR TE DEUM. Late last year (2004) Chandos jumped on the band wagon and recorded TRIAL BY JURY and COX AND BOX and this was issued this spring (2005) and there are plans to record IVANHOE in 2007.

Not too much of a surprise then that Hyperion should record THE CONTRABANDISTA. It has to be stated that it is a pity that as much care has not been taken over this recording as was taken over the previous two - Certainly with all three copies that I have tried there is an annoying skip in the first two tracks which reappears at about track 9 - however this only occurs on one of my CD players so I guess the disc is just a little sensitive. The other gripe is that the principals are placed very forward in the Finale Act 1 making Donald Maxwell (Jose) over-prominent in the choral sections.

All this aside it has to be said that this is a magnificent recording and one which hopefully will persuade amateur companies to include the work in their repertoires. The disc filler, THE FORESTERS, is a revelatory bonus.

Well, I enjoyed it! 9 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD
Having heard some pretty dire recordings of some of Sullivan's lesser-known works in the past I hesitated over getting this issue after reading one cautionary and one completely negative review of it on this site. I finally took the plunge and requested it as a birthday gift for myself and have to say that I enjoyed it very much. The works themselves are not in the same class as Sullivan produced with Gilbert as his collaborator (it amused me to find Sullivan plundering both the wolf's glen scene from "Freischutz" and Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream" music for the fairy scene in "The Foresters") but there is much to enjoy and quite a few of the numbers in "The Contrabandista" suggest what was to come in the "G&S" years. The performances may not be top-notch but, compared to what we are usually offered in recordings of obscure (and sometimes not too obscure!) operettas and musical comedies, they are very acceptable. Furthermore I had no issues over malfunctioning tracks on the copy I received, unlike another reviewer of this issue.

Pretty bad 14 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
In a comic opera in English, it is not unreasonable to ask that the singers have some concept of what they're actually singing. And yet, not one of these singers, as far as I can tell, does. Heated rows are sung as if simple polite conversation, despite the two characters supposedly being at each other's throats by the end of the row. "From rock to rock", a staple of Sullivan-without-Gilbert concerts, has never sounded so dull. Absolutely no emotion or characterisation ever comes through, and in a comic opera, set by Sullivan, a composer noted for very careful setting of lyrics to fit the drama, however unexpectedly he might choose to do so, this is a downright shame.

I can't help but feel this recording does far more harm than good for the reputation of a work already limited in popularity by appalling dialogue.
