Book Description

Hello, mate!
(Practicing my Australian.* How am I doing?)

I'm so glad the timing worked out for this couch exchange. I'll be crashing on yours by the time you get to mine.** If you run into any problems, just find Alyssa. She'll help you out with whatever you need.***

Your couch-swapping mate,
Rick

*That's cute. Go have fun in Australia and leave ME—your girlfriend for an entire semester—to waste away on campus, alone.

**Um, think again. Your couch is already taken.

***Great. Now I've got to find a place for the (unbelievably hot, it turns out) Aussie to crash. But there's only one couch available: the one in my dorm room. . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 25 Feb. 2009

Things you should never do that involve a new guy:

* Never fall for the guy the very first day at your very first university, and then hang out with him constantly.
* Never allow him to think it would be best to go on a break.
* Never let him leave, during the break of the relationship, to go to Australia. There is no possible way that things will work out!
* Never act coy about the whole situation - get him to talk since he's going to be Down Under (but hopefully not for long).
* Never have him replaced by a hot guy with an accent (an Australian one to be exact).

Unfortunately, all these things that you should never do? Alyssa has done them all.

Now she's stuck during winter break without her "boyfriend," Rick, a new Australian roomie, and thoughts on whether or not Rick will stay true to her, or even if she will stay true to him.

Rachel Hawthorne never fails to entertain with her seasonal novels, and SUITE DREAMS is one of the finest. Ms. Hawthorne is able to perfectly capture the woes of first love and first boyfriends.

What's the best part? Seeing the main character get stronger and understanding exactly what is best for her - and not for some guy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Suite Indeed 4 Jun. 2009
By Shelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When I pick up this type of book I am looking for three main things:

1. There is a real reason that the two main characters would be interested in each other. It isn't enough in my opinion to simply say, "he was hot, he was there, now we're madly in love". The characters have to connect, and have experiences that bring them together; they have to have quirks that are endearing and banter that is compelling. Suite dreams definitely delivered on this point.

2. The characters behave in a way that is appropriate to their age and situation without getting cheesy. So many young adult novels miss the mark when it comes to this criterion. I don't want to hear awkward slang, "cool phrases" popping up all over the book that make it difficult to understand and get into. Teenagers should act like teenagers, but it annoys me when authors try to shove 'teen-speak' in your face. I found that the characters in this book were completely believable. Their conversations were realistic as were their stresses and worries. I could honestly relate to everyone depicted in this book, so that's another big check mark.

3. The pacing has to be balanced. I'm looking for a page turner with this kind of book, and I don't want to be bogged down with too many long descriptors or lengthy analysis of what the characters are thinking and feeling and doing. On the other hand, if you jam too much into a story it feels unbelievable and fake. Suite dreams hit the mark once more, and kept the pace quick but realistic, with just enough description to paint the picture for me and let my imagination work. Humor was mixed in perfectly to keep me giggling along with the characters. I admit there was one part of the book that made me roll my eyes a bit, but overall, it was very well done.

SO if you are looking for a teen romantic comedy, this is definitely my recommendation. It delivers on everything a girl could want in a book like this. I give it four stars, not five, simply because this type of book really isn't great literature or anything. It's a formula book, which is wonderful, but not really 5-star worthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing =] 5 Jan. 2009

I got this book in the mail for christmas and i just read it yesterday and Rachel Hawthorne amazed me again. i love Rachel's books and this one was just as good as her others, maybe even better.

The books starts off with how Alyssa finds out that her BF of a semester practically dumps her to go to Australia for winter break doing this Couch Swap(not telling her about the couch-swap). Now with Alyssa with nothing to do over break she decides to work extra shifts and take some extra classes, thinking what a great break. that is until she gets off of work one night and runs into this Australian Hottie Jude. They hit if off from the start.....and he needs a couch to sleep on...

2.0 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment 26 Feb. 2011
By MommaTori - Published on Amazon.com

I have enjoyed other books by this author, but this book left me majorly disappointed. The premise is cutesy, but not in an overly cheesy way. However, the author creates a dilemma for the characters (the budding long distance romance) and then never solves it. The ending wrapped up incredibly quickly and was vastly unsatisfying. I know I shouldn't expect too much from this particular genre, but I feel like the author was just too lazy to give the characters an ending they deserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy 20 July 2011
By Jennifer Rummel - YABookNerd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Alyssa and her boyfriend have decided to take a break over their winter break. Rick decides to go to Australia while Alyssa plans on taking classes and working. She doesn't plan on finding a boy outside her dorm waiting for her. Jude expects a couch in Rick's suite as payment for the couch he's lending her ex-boyfriend in Australia. Rick never mentioned Jude and when Alyssa discovers his suite is filled, she takes it upon herself to let him stay with her (against the rules). She finds herself becoming Jude's tour guide. Because she and Rick left things open, she doesn't know where she stands relationshipwise, but she does know that the though of Jude with another girl makes her downright jealous.

I love how this takes place in college, I wish more YA books covered this time period. I love how Alyssa plays tourist with Jude - showing him the sights of the town. I love the snowball scene. A sweet love story that's sure to please.
