A vivid, if somewhat macbre, insight into a neglected area of medieval history. In his vignettes Murray brings the Middle Ages to life for scholar and layman alike. Murray's analysis is always highly readable and expressed with admirable clarity and occasional humour.I await the next two volumes with impatience.
