Product Description

John Wareing, Bishop of Carlisle, 21st July 1897

This book can not fail to be of much interest, and I believe that in the future it may have an abiding value as preserving the record of old customs and former events which otherwise would have perished amid the sands of time.

From the Publisher

Around 1983, I read Rev. Sugden's History of Arlecdon and Frizington, for the first time. My copy then, was not the original 1897 book, but a collection of rather bad photocopies, stapled in one corner. The original book had for many years been quite scarce, even odd secondhand copies would exchange hands for large sums of money. To simply reproduce the book as a facsimile of the old text would have been inappropriate, we have therefore added many additional notes to the text, to make a more complete history for today's reader. These revisions do not only record events that have happerned since the book first appeared, but put into context much of what Rev. Sugden had written. In an attempt to verify facts and figures, I followed in Rev Sugden's footsteps, examining much of the papers he would have referred to. Many more are now more easily available through the County Record Office, have added a new and extra dimension to the book. Rev. Sugden would have envied our access to this information, but I am convinced he would have approved of it's inclusion. (Richard L. M. Byers, November 1997)
