The Sugarland Express is based on the true story of Lou Jean Poplin, who kidnapped a Texas State Trooper and led the police on a wild goose chase across the states in an effort to save her son from adoption. This complex role was enough to lure Goldie Hawn back to the screen after a one year hiatus following her Oscar award winning performance in Cactus Flower. It also marks the feature film debut of a young, now famous, director, Stephen Spielberg.

This movie is over 30 years-old, but holds up well. The story is moving, yet not all very sentimental. Many believe that THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS was a flop in cinema. This is not true. The original film earned over $8 million in the USA in it's original release which at the time made the movie a modest success. It wasn't until a year later with the release of JAWS that the first $100 million movie would be distributed, setting a new standard of success in Hollywood.

This is one of Spielberg's very best films, a low-budget road movie made after the TV film "Duel", and I rate it alongside Jaws.
Great cinematography, pace and some terrific acting (I especially love the dialogue between the old couple in the car at the roadside)
And although it's about a dysfunctional family par excellence, there's not a teddy bear or little boy looking for his lost father in sight.

There is a certain quality about all films made around this time. The cinematography in this film is outstanding, the acting is good and although the film is fairly long, it moves at a fast enough pace to hold the viewer's attention. An absorbing road movie/drama based on a true story.

Criminally Under-rated Road Movie

Goldie before she was Goldie Hawn
