Format: Hardcover
THE SUGAR QUEEN is about Josey, a 27 year-old woman whose life is tainted by the way she used to be as a youngster. Everyone in her small community of Bald Slope only remember her as a naughty young girl; even her mother seems to only see her as the echo of who she used to be. So, in order to make up for her past, Josey has chosen to be a good person - to be thoughtful, obedient and to solely live for her mother's convenience. Her private delights are sweets, which she hides in her room, and romance novels. But then, one day, Josey opens her closet and finds a local waitress, Della Lee sitting amongst her clothes, and from that moment on her life is never the same. For Della Lee is described as being the equivalent of one part nemesis and two parts fairy godmother for Josey. It is through her presence that Josey's predictable life slowly begins to untangle and Josey begins to change - to live.

This is the second novel I have read by Addison Allen - her debut GARDEN SPELLS was also very good. Her writing has an element of magic realism in them - at the centre of the plot is a very human story about relationships, betrayal, love and forgiveness, whilst at the same time there is the touch of magic to make the book a little less ordinary. Recommended for those who like their literature with a touch of sweetness!

This book is about Josey, a young woman trapped in a life she doesn't like, in a town that only remembers the 9-year old girl she used to be, with a mother who doesn't love her. Until she opens her closet and her life as she knows it is over... With the help of Della Lee, she manages to change her life and fulfill her dreams! A beautifully written book about love, friendship, forgiveness and candy!!!The Sugar Queen

I bought this book because I had nothing better to read at that time and I had already read "garden spells" and thought: why not?? (Although if a book doesn't have vampires, witches, werewolves etc in it, I consider it unworthy of my time...). But from the moment I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! And I didn't! I read it in one afternoon... The part where Josey describes her first kiss with Adam is the most magical description of a first kiss I have ever read!!! Heaven!!!

Format: Paperback
After enjoying Sarah Allen's debut 'Garden Spells' a couple of months ago, I was hoping that this book would be written in a similar vein- with just the right balance of romance, sweetness and magic. It was actually better. I completely adored this novel and devoured it in about two hours- I just couldn't put it down.

Josey Cirrini isn't the typical Southern belle. For one thing, she's completely under her overpowering mother's thumb. Friendless Josey also hides stockpiles of candy and romance paperbacks in her closet, where a local waitress with a troubled life has decided to seek shelter, simultaneously blackmailing her into the bargain. Just when you thought Josey's life couldn't get any more complicated, her mailman, who she's been secretly in love with for three years, happens to find out the feelings she's been harbouring for him...

This is a wonderful read with so many stories entwined in one. The characters are all depicted so well and you feel like you end up knowing them- in particular Chloe, Josey's new friend, who has a particular affinity with books (they magically appear out of thin air trying to tell her things- love it!) and Adam, Josey's love interest. Josey is a heroine you'll end up cheering for and wanting to come out on top whilst admiring her loyalty and determination. If you're a fan of Cecilia Ahern or Christina Jones then you'll undoubtedly love this book.

Format: Paperback
This lovely little book is tender, uplifting, and easy to read.

Josey Cirrini is trapped in an enormous house in North Carolina, having to care for her overbearing wicked mother. Unable to enjoy her life, she finds comfort in travel magazines, romance novels and tonnes of candy that she hides inside a secret closet in her room. Across town, Chloe Finley is trying to pick up the pieces after her unfaithful boyfriend left her heartbroken and alone. Chloe had invested everything in her relationship and lost herself in the process, now her only comfort and guide are the books that magically appear when she needs them. These two lonely, broken young women are brought together by Della Lee Baker, a strange woman who mysteriously appears inside Josey's secret closet and stubbornly refuses to leave, until she helps them turn their lives around and discover themselves.

Once again Sarah Addison Allen delivers an excellently written coming of age story with a touch of magic. Her lonely and defeated characters discover themselves and overcome their insecurities and social conventions, in order to find love and happiness. The plot is well developed with beautiful descriptions and likable characters. What is really great in this unconventional fairytale for grownups is that like in life there are no heroes and villains; the unfaithful boyfriend is just as heartbroken and the wicked mother is really an insecure woman with a sad past.

The element of magic in the book, like in all of the author's novels, is enough to enrich the story and remind the reader of the magic that exists in life, without making it a fantasy or science fiction novel. I loved the idea that books magically appear to us when we need them and I think that in way they really do; how wonderful that this book found me.

The book also includes a special preview of The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen.
