This book is primarily a collection of photos dating from the mid 1860s until the 1950s. The photos are of good quality, well produced and varied. Well worth seeing, particularly from a part of the country that does not generally feature too much.

My one complaint is that it does not really live up to its title. I appreciate that the compiler can only use the photos that exist but they are strongly concentrated on Ipswich, Felixstowe, the main line and the coast lines. Nothing at all from Newmarket (lots of excursions for humans and equines), nothing at all from Lowestoft which had quite an extensive railway system.

Branch lines are covered but not that to Eye, those from Bury to Thetford and Long Melford, nor the Stour Valley line which straddles the Suffolk border.

A nice book and well produced but it ought really to be called "Ipswich Area Steam Railways".
