Rural Crime 9 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This really is a well researched, well written book involving murders - some of them quite sensational - which occurred in rural Suffolk between 1850 and 1925; all without the assistance of Scotland Yard. Mind you, with the murderers stating, "I meant to do it. I went and bought the knife on purpose" and "I'm guilty and there you are," I expect any offer of assistance from the capital would have been regarded as superfluous.

One of the outstandingly fascinating cases recorded by the author, Mark Mower, was that of John Mickleburgh in 1851. Indisputably as bonkers as conkers, Mickleburgh stabbed to death a housemaid with whom he had had an adulterous relationship and was sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to one of transportation and when he returned home, less than 20 years later, his wife, who had bigamously re-married, died and Mickleburgh was sent to the workhouse where he, in turn was stabbed to death by an inmate who was tried for murder and acquitted.

Couldn't make it up, could you? And Mr. Mower doesn't - every one of the seven cases contained in the book have been meticulously researched and to lovers of Suffolk and vintage murder investigations, this book contains both and is highly recommended.

Suffolk Murders by Mark Mower.

This is a sumptuous book, with a glossy cover and many photos and illustrations dotted through the extensively researched narrative.

It is a `true crime` book, and chronicles some of the more notorious murder cases, which took place in Suffolk as well as some of the less well-known cases.

Mark Mower has researched the cases using original source materials and contemporary accounts, and what really adds to the stories is the detail of the areas in which they took place. Suffolk is a largely rural county on the edge of the country, and we are given a glimpse of rendered cottages and cheek by jowl living in East Anglian villages.

This book is not only fascinating reading, it would make a great gift for anyone interested in the criminal mind and the influence of setting upon behaviour.

Highly recommended.
